The Element Pictures project which stars Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan and Nicole Kidman shares the award with ‘You Were Never Really Here’ writer/director Lynne Ramsay.
Yorgos Lanthimos co-wrote the script with Efthimis Filippou who also collaborated on the script for 2017 Jury Prize winner ‘The Lobster’, which also received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay.
Lanthimos also produces the project alongside Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney of Element Pictures. Praise for the psychological thriller continued throughout the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, with young actor Barry Keoghan in particular, making his mark on the international film scene.
Yorgos Lanthimos:
“I am not disappointed to share this prize because Lynne Ramsay is a great director. It takes nothing away from my joy in receiving it. My co-author and I are very good friends. We push our ideas to their limits because for us, that is the only way of revealing certain aspects of human nature. It’s our way of working. I would like to work in a language I don't know, in a foreign country.”
Ed Guiney, Element Pictures
“All of us at Element are absolutely delighted with the script prize for Efthymis and Yorgos. Yorgos has made a masterful signature film which will enthrall audiences around the world. We are very grateful to all of our financiers including Film4, New Sparta, Hanway and the Irish Film Board”
Nicole Kidman was also awarded the distinctive 70th Anniversary Prize. The Australian actress also shares the screen with Farrell in Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Beguiled’, which received the award for Best Director.
