The Irish drama from Cowtown Pictures will receive its world premiere at the Swiss festival, which is dedicated to indie and cutting-edge cinema, in August later this year.
An Irish/UK co-production, LOLA is written by Andrew Legge and Angeli Macfarlane, from a story by Legge and Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth (Tell it to the Bees).
Set in 1941 war-torn England, sisters Thomasina and Martha create a machine that can intercept broadcasts from the future. This delightful apparatus allows them to explore their inner punk a generation before the movement comes into existence. But with World War II escalating the sisters decide to use the machine as a weapon of intelligence, with world-altering consequences.
Emma Appleton and Stefanie Martini play the lead roles of Thom and Mars. The cast also includes actors Rory Fleck Byrne and Aaron Monaghan (Brassic). LOLA is a complex mix of archive and music, and acclaimed singer/songwriter, Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy, has composed original songs and the score for the film.
Shot on location in Kildare and Dublin, the film is produced by Alan Maher and John Wallace of Cowtown Pictures (Rialto) in association with Alice Lusher and Catryn Ramasut of ie ie productions, with funding from Screen Ireland, Head Gear Films, Ffilm Cymru Wales, and ROADS Entertainment. Executive producers are Phil Hunt, Compton Ross, Stephen Kelliher, Sophie Green, Dearbhla Regan, Bizzy Day, Andrew Legge and Danielle Ryan. Bankside Films is handling world sales for the film.
Bankside Films previously boarded the project as sales agent.
The 75th anniversary of the Locarno International Film Festival will run from the 4th - 14th August, 2022.
