The Queen v Patrick O'Donnell
ROSG’s feature docu-drama, The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell has been named as a finalist for the Vancouver Independent Film Festival's May issue.

The docu-drama will compete in the Best International Documentary section of the festival with VIFF hoping to have a physical event in late summer, which is contingent on the ongoing Covid situation in Vancouver.

The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell reveals on screen for the first time the true story behind one of the most compelling murder plots in Irish history, a thrilling tale of violence, courtroom drama, romance, and political intrigue.

“It was challenging to produce the film in the time of Covid but we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved,” Producer, Ciarán Ó Cofaigh told IFTN. We’ve only begun to apply to festivals but it’s always good to start well and the selection for the Vancouver Independent Film Festival is definitely a good start.”

After the Phoenix Park Assassinations on May 6th 1882 and the subsequent hanging of five members of the Invincibles, a chain of events was set in motion that ended with the killing of James Carey. The full story is told in a new feature  film, The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell to be screened this year.

Containing evidence from British Home Office files kept secret for 100 years, it reveals shocking new information about the fate of the quiet-spoken Donegal man who killed the infamous informer James Carey on board a ship off the coast of South Africa in 1883.

The same team that brought Murdair Mhám Trasna to our screens has reassembled for this powerful telling of an extraordinary story, following extensive research that Seán Ó Cuirreáin has undertaken for ROSG.

Actors Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde, Stephen Jones, Brídín Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh and Sophie Campbell portray the roles of the main characters in the feature docu-drama.

The docu-drama is directed by Tomás Seoighe and produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh, Eilís Ní Cheallaigh & Seán Ó Cuirreáin for ROSG. The feature doc was made with funding from TG4, Screen Ireland, and the BAI.

The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell looks into what might have possessed the illiterate labourer from the Donegal Gaeltacht to shoot the leader of The Invincibles; who the mystery woman posing as his wife was; and why both the US President and the French luminary Victor Hugo pleaded that Patrick O’Donnell not be hanged for his crime.

The film is adapted from the soon to be published book The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell, written by Seán Ó Cuirreáin for Four Courts Press.

The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell will be screened in 2021.
