Trailer released for Gerard Lough's Irish thriller Spears
14 Jan 2021 : News Desk
Bobby Calloway in Spears.
Shot in four different countries, this ambitious independent production will have a much larger scope than Lough’s debut feature horror, Night People (2015).

Originally filming in Donegal, the neo-noir style thriller has since filmed in Florence, London, and Berlin between 2018 and 2020.

With a moody atmosphere and pervading sense of paranoia, Spears is said to be deeply rooted in the Neo-Noir style and explore topical themes both political and technological. Director Gerard Lough, best known for the short Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman, previously stated that he intended to “try and readdress the balance” in relation to style with his upcoming thriller, which he felt was “lacking in current Irish cinema”.

"I was attracted to neo-noir as it served as both a change of genre to my last film, Night People, which was horror/sci-fi, as well as playing to my strengths of striking visuals, foreboding atmosphere, and style,” Lough previously told IFTN.

Aidan O'Sullivan, Bobby Calloway, and Nigel Brennan head up an international cast that also includes Michael Parle, Yalda Shahidi, Rebecca Rose Flynn, and Thomas Sharkey.

The complex plot begins when Private Investigator Kian (Brennan) is sent to Florence, Italy to find a woman (Shahidi) who mysteriously disappeared there. Meanwhile in London, a dissident republican (O'Sullivan) does an arm's deal with a new seller he does not trust. In Berlin, a scam artist (Calloway) spends a weekend with a married woman (Flynn), who he tries to convince to leave with him.

Each of the three men make a startling discovery, which forces them to team up in Ireland and take revenge on those who have wronged them. Fittingly, the film’s title is taken from the Emily Bronte quote; “Treachery and violence are spears pointed by both ends; they wound those who resort to them worse than their enemies.”

"I was keen to weave it into a story that would work as a cautionary tale that asks the audience that it may be natural to want to get your own back, but do two wrongs ever make a right?,” said Lough when speaking with RTE Entertainment.

"What's interesting is when the three protagonists decide to hit back at another group, the line between the good guys and bad guys becomes blurred very quickly and it's hard to tell them apart after a while,” Lough continued. “That's why I love the Neo-Noir genre; things are never simply black and white, moral ambiguity abounds... like real life."

The film will also showcase some of the best upcoming Irish and British electronica with music from artists such as Shaefri, Sleep Thieves, Le Groupe Fantastique, and Exit: Pursued by a Bear. Is This Ready? by Sleep Thieves can be heard on the trailer.

Spears will be released in 2021.
