Finné Series 2 returns for six weeks as part of TG4's Wednesday Documentary Season
20 Sep 2019 : News Desk
Sophia Murphy,Orla O'Donnell and Amy Dunne
Following on from its award-winning first series of documentaries, Finné (Witness) returns to TG4 screens for a second series exploring the personal testimony of those who have lived through trying times.

Filmed over 12 months by Galway’s Tua Films and presented by RTE’s courts correspondent, Orla O’Donnell, Finné is a jaw-dropping, Netflix-inspired documentary series shining a light into the darkest corners of Irish society. Through riveting first person testimony, Finné recounts intimate stories of triumphs and traumas, of Davids and Goliaths, of dogged resilience and human frailties. Season 1 was awarded the Human Rights award at the prestigious Justice Media Awards in 2019.

Speaking about the show, Tua Films’ Paddy Hayes, series producer and director of 2 of the 6 episodes said:

“I always think of African-American activist Ida Wells Barnett when I think of the stories in this second season when she said: The Way to Right Wrongs is to Turn the Light of Truth Upon Them. Finné allows each individual the time and the freedom to tell their raw and powerful stories in their own words, and to shine the light of truth upon them.”

These are the witnesses, and these are their stories…

EP 1: Mayo native Sophia Murphy tells her remarkable story of triumph over adversity as she comes to terms with her father’s conviction in 2018 for her sexual abuse from the age of 3.

EP 2: Former Post Office manager Tony O’ Reilly recounts how he stole €1.75 million from An Post and gambled €10 million through one Paddy Power betting account, before being sent to prison.

EP 3: Amy Dunne (or Miss D) recalls her fight through the courts to be allowed to travel to the UK for an abortion in 2007 when she became pregnant with a fatal foetal abnormality as a teenager.

EP 4: Paddy Merrigan chronicles how he struggled with his mental health while enjoying his meteoric rise to fame and fall from grace as a racing jockey. Now he’s ready for his comeback.

EP 5: Former Garda Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire looks back at his investigation into the Fr. Greene sexual abuse case in Donegal, one of the worst such cases this country has ever seen.

EP 6: Francie McGuigan and Liam Shannon, two of the ‘hooded men’ recount their experience of being subjected to mental and physical maltreatment when interned in 1970s Belfast.

This 6 x 60-minute original production promises a gripping and rare insight into these high-profile stories as told through the eyes of those still bearing the scars and living with the consequences. It reinforces TG4’s reputation for fresh, bold programming featuring extraordinary Irish stories.

TG4 is renowned for its documentaries and Season 2 of Finné promises not to disappoint. Powerful storytelling forms the backbone of TG4’s varied and compelling documentaries airing Wednesdays at 9.30pm.

Finné begins on Wednesday 2nd October @9.30pm for 6 weeks on TG4.
