Arracht to world premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival
29 Oct 2019 : Nathan Griffin
Dónall Ó Héalaí in Arracht.
Tom Sullivan’s Irish language feature film, Arracht (Monster) has been selected for the competition section (Grand Prix) at the 2019 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia where it will make its world premiere.

Set in Ireland in 1845, Arracht centres on Colmán Sharkey, a fisherman, a father, a husband, who takes in a stranger at the behest of a local priest. Patsy, a former soldier arrives just ahead of ‘the blight,’ a crop disease that caused the Great Plague, killing and displacing millions of Irish people.

Speaking about the announcement, writer/director Tom Sullivan said:

“I am honoured that our film will have its world premiere in the main competition at Tallinn. It has been a life-changing experience making Arracht. From witnessing the commitment of the cast, particularly Dónall Ó Héalaí, whose total dedication and immersion in his process inspired us all. To the crew, who battled three Atlantic storms, ‘with names,’ to bring Arracht home. We are all so excited to launch the film in the beautiful city of Tallinn along with so many talented filmmakers.”

Filmed entirely on the remote west coast of Ireland in Connemara, Arracht is a haunting tale of overcoming grief and the fight for survival. The film stars Dónall Ó Héalaí, Michael McElhatton, Siobhán O’Kelly, Dara Devaney, Peter Coonan, Seán T. Ó Meallaigh, Michelle Beamish and introduces 11-year old Saise Ní Chuinn.

Arracht is a feature film by Macalla, supported by TG4, the Irish Film Board (IFB), and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) through the Cine4 scheme. Written and directed by Tom Sullivan. Produced by Cúán Mac Conghail for Macalla.

The Official Selection - competition has been run in its present form since the festival received it’s ‘A-category’ status from FIAPF in 2014. Since then the programme has been a competition programme without any geographic restrictions, screening world, international or European premieres of established filmmakers that the festival’s programming team wishes to highlight for its audience, film critics and the international film industry.

The programme will be overseen by an international jury of film industry professionals that will be announced in November. They will hand out the following prizes: Grand Prix for the Best Film (grant of 10 000 euros from the City of Tallinn, shared by the Director and Producer); Best Director (grant of 5000 euros); Best Script; Best Actress; Best Actor; Best Cinematographer (grant of 1000 euros from Angel Films); Best Music.

Arracht is set to release in autumn 2020.
