Jane Goldman's 'Game of Thrones' Spin-off Gets Pilot Order from HBO
15 Jun 2018 : Nathan Griffin
HBO has confirmed that it has given the green light to the first ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off series. The news came following production wrapping on the eighth and final season of George R.R. Martin’s record breaking hit-show ‘GoT’.

Jane Goldman and ‘Game of Thrones’ creator George R.R. Martin are said to have worked closely together to co-write the series that will serve as a prequel to the original series, which is based on Martin’s ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ novel series.

HBO announced that the series would be “taking place thousands of years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’”, Goldman’s untitled project is said to chronicle “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

There are currently five ‘GoT’ spin-off’s in development with HBO commissioning Max Borenstein, Brian Helgeland, Carly Wray and Bryan Cogman, as well as Jane Goldman to work with Martin in developing five standalone series, independent of the original franchise storyline.

When asked by Deadline about how many of these projects might materialise onscreen, HBO President of Programming, Casey Bloys said:

“Anywhere from zero to five, but probably more likely around one. I’m happy with what I’m seeing but don’t have a time table yet in terms of how we’re going to make decision.”

Goldman will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the untitled project. This news has led to speculation that Goldman’s female influence may lead to a female lead character being the focal point of the upcoming series, following Jon Snow story arc in ‘Game of Thrones’. Goldman boasts an impressive credits list including: ‘Stardust’, Kick-Ass’, ‘Kingsman’, and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.

Alongside Goldman and Martin who are credited with creating the story, Vince Gerardis and Daniel Zelman have also been revealed as executive producers for the pilot.

HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ franchise has been stationed in Northern Ireland for over seven years, employing hundreds and nesting itself firmly in the community with Titanic Studios being expanded to facilitate the show’s growing set demands. This includes the creation of an external standalone castle structure costing over £1 million for the final season. Irish post-production company Windmill Lane has also enjoyed a fruitful relationship, with the company receiving numerous awards for their work throughout the franchise.

The news of a new spin-off pilot coupled with the fact that the eighth and final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ has wrapped in Belfast, will have many intrigued about HBO’s decision on the location of the next instalment of its greatest ever franchise.
