The Dublin Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People is back for its 10th year, and last Friday one of the events being held in the lead up to the festival gave children aged 8-12 the chance to take part in a masterclass in TV presenting.

Hosted by presenters Ben Shires (‘Officially Amazing’, ‘Match of the Day Kickabout’) and Katie Thistleton (CBBC HQ, ‘CBBC Book Club’) and special guest DJ and former RTÉjr Kids presenter Emma O’Driscoll they providde a unique insight into the exciting world of television presenting.

Covering things like; how to prepare for filming, working in a live studio, interviewing techniques, how to get your own personality across on screen, and can you stop yourself laughing in front of the camera?

There was a fun and enjoyable atmosphere in the room for the two hour interactive session, which covered challenges that gave advice and top tips, as well as showcasing the importance of life skills such as confidence, self-esteem and resilience.

IFTN caught up with BBC kids presenters Ben and Katie to see how they though the event in Dublin went and the potential of the young Irish talent in the room.

Katie Thistleton: “It went brilliantly! We were slightly concerned that children in Dublin might not have watched us on TV but they have. They were absolutely brilliant, what’s great is that the kids that we had here all do have some interest in working in a film or tv industry and were just really energetic to get involved with today. In fact some of them had already done some voice over work and acting. There is definitely some superstar kids here!”

“Some of them are better qualified then we are” laughed Ben Shires. He went on to say, “I thought what was brilliant as well is that, we have been very lucky in that we have travelled all around the UK. We’ve gone from Glasgow to Brighton and everywhere in between and you find all sorts of different types of kids. Some of them are more engaged than others and even in this room today you could see there were various confidence levels and abilities, but what was amazing was that if they knew each other or not and from whatever background they came from they were all engaged for those two hours.

“They all wanted to involve themselves, even the shyer kids I think had an input and it was really exciting for us. This is about TV presenting, but we like to flatter ourselves and think it’s about a bit more than that as well. It’s about knowing one’s own abilities and strengths. It’s about confidence , it’s about working with strangers, speaking in front of an audience that you would have never done before and whether they go on to become presenters, actors or accountants, hopefully those things will stay with them and if nothing else we hope they’ve had a good two hours!”

Budding presenters Lily (11) and Ben Nolan (11) from Dublin, and CBBC presenters Ben Shires and Katie Thistleton set their sights on the coveted BAFTA and IFTA awards at the Cinemagic, BAFTA Kids TV presenting Masterclass in association with IFTA. The masterclass taught children aged 8-12, top tips about tv presenting to be in with a chance to report at the Cinemagic Film Festival during 5th-14th

Talking about the strength of the Irish accent Ben said: “If I was in this room right now and I was Irish I would think I have such a great accent and honestly if you go over to England or whatever it just marks you out straight away as somebody interesting. Whilst kids might not probably realise that and think they have to get rid of accents, it’s the worst thing you could possibly do and actually an accent is a prized possession. You should never lose something like that which makes you, YOU’ and I think it’s really nice that kids here are starting to recognise that and focus on what makes them so special.”

Speaking to IFTN about the TV presenting master class Emma O’Driscoll said: “I thought the event was an eye opener in terms of the talent that’s up and coming. We can sometimes forget how much children practice and the level they can get to at their age. I always make sure myself that I don’t underestimate children and today kind of reminded me of that to definitely never underestimate, because you see the standard that they can get to and it’s fantastic.”

As part of the event Emma took part and was involved with some of the practice challenges with the kids in which she had to stand in the middle of the room and be interviewed on the red carpet by various children. “It was interesting, they asked me a couple of questions that I’d never been asked before and I liked that because you can tend to be asked the similar questions I found that very interesting and positive,” she said.

IFTN asked Emma the importance of doing events like this with kids, she said: “For confidence, it’s really important, to make them socially aware and to make them socially conscious of how they speak, how they hold themselves and stand. How they present themselves to others, because how you present yourself to somebody reflects the response you get back.  It also helps to make them aware of how they ask questions and how they phrase them and how they approach a situation.”

Emma was also one of the judges helping to select two lucky participants who will get the chance to present during Cinemagic in May and report from the Festival she described that experience saying: “It’s hard to judge children, because they are so diverse. When we become adults we start to blend into each other and become similar to all our friends, but kids are really different to each other and it’s a good thing. The longer they can hold their uniqueness from everybody else in the world the better.”

The Dublin Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People takes place from 5th-14th May and includes an exciting array of new film screenings, workshops, CineSeekers and CineFocus juries and masterclasses for young people aged 4-25.
