Windmill Lane Founder James Morris steps down after 35 years
21 Apr 2016 : Seán Brosnan
James Morris
Windmill Lane Pictures announced today that company founder James Morris is stepping down as Executive Chairman.

James has been at the helm of Windmill Lane from its origin as a film editing company to the Windmill of today and has been central to the many technical and creative innovations in the company's 35 year history.

From the building of the original Windmill Lane Studios, to the introduction of Parliamentary Broadcasting in Ireland, leading the Windmill Consortium's successful bid for TV3, and founding the UK's first all-digital commercials specialist vfx company, The Mill Facility, in 1990.

Outside of his role in Windmill Lane James has served as Chairman of TV3 from its commencement in 1998 until it was sold in 2007 to Doughty Hanson, as Chairman of the Mill and co-chair with Ridley Scott of Mill Film until 2002, and served two terms as the Chair of The Irish Film Board. For the future James intends to remain active in the film industry and said:

"Windmill has evolved through many, many changes because of the talent and enthusiasm of everyone who works or has ever worked here. For the first time in quite a while we are seeing signs of growth in the Irish market and Internationally, with disruption very much a feature of the changing environment. So this is a good time for change in Windmill as well, and for Dave, Tim and the teams they work with, to identify and develop new opportunities for Windmill as a creative company."

Following the appointment of Dave Quinn as CEO of Windmill Lane in 2013, James has concentrated mainly on developing Windmill Lane Visual Effects, a new division specialising in Visual Effects for feature film and television drama. Windmill Lane Visual Effects recently completed work on the Irish hit 'Brooklyn', the recently screened RTE drama 'Rebellion', and is completing work on Jim Sheridan's 'Secret Scripture' and Parallel Film's 'Jadotville' directed by Richie Smyth.

Morris continued: "Leaving Windmill is also a big change for me and although I plan to continue working in the film industry in the future, I will miss being part of that collaborative creative effort that Windmill brings to all the work it does."

CEO Dave Quinn added: "James’s innumerable contributions to Windmill and the wider industry for more than three decades have been profound. We wish him continued success in the next chapter of his distinguished career. I am humbled, excited and looking forward to building on James’s legacy, particularly during a time of unprecedented change, challenge and opportunity in the Film, TV & Advertising business.”
