Irish writer/director Colin Downey has won first prize in a top category in The Los Angeles Screenplay Competition.
Chosen by Hollywood studio script readers, ‘The Brave Tin Soldier’, a project initiated by the Irish Film Board and Downey’s next project in development, has been honoured with first prize in the Family Film category.
It has been a successful few weeks for Downey as his feature film ‘Daria’ recently won awards at both the Nevada International Film Festival and the Mexico International Film Festival.
Speaking about the win, Colin Downey said: “I was entering festivals for ‘Daria’ and I saw that there were some fantastic screenplay contests out there which can be real game changers, especially in the American Industry. To get this honour is just wonderful and it opens doors now that seemed impossible before."
‘The Brave Tin Soldier’ is adapted from Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy-tale and blends magic, adventure and musical comedy with a modern environmental theme. All the characters of the original fairy-tale are incorporated into a quest where a young girl, Jenny, tries to find her father in a world turned upside down by the dark magic of the Black Goblin. Her only hope is her friend and guide, Tommy, the Brave Tin Soldier.
