Colin Broderick on Production of 'A Bend in The River' and the Release of 'Emerald City’
29 Nov 2018 : News Desk
Seeing Broderick Reunite with ‘Emerald City’ stars John Duddy and John McConnell and starring IFTA winning actor John Connors (‘Cardboard Gangsters’), A Bend in The River follows the story of writer Matt Donnelly, who returns to his native Tyrone to face the ghosts of his past.

Speaking about the project, Broderick told IFTN:

“It's really a story about Northern Ireland, it's about coming to terms with the past, dealing with the pain, and finally being able to let it all go.”

It’s a movie that has taken on a much deeper resonance for me over the past few months in the editing room.  The tone of the movie has really revealed itself fully now and Shane Kelly's cinematography is just quite astounding. You've never seen County Tyrone portrayed cinematically with this much love.”

Currently in post-production, ‘A Bend in The River’ is produced by Julie Ryan with MK1 productions, producer of the hit Irish comedy, movie-turned-sitcom ‘The Young Offenders’. Other Irish crew on the project include editor Mike Foote and Irish composer Colm Mac Con Lomaire.

“It's not quite the traditional way of making a movie, but I've never really been a traditional type of anything to be honest.  It's a way of working that requires a lot of support, faith and belief from those around you, but when it finally comes together like ‘A Bend in the River’ has, the result is magic. I've been lucky to have the support of my producer Julie Ryan (The Young Offenders). she has the patience of a saint with me and really supports my vision.”

“We are currently shooting for completion mid-November to have it ready for Tribeca Film Festival.”

As well as directing the Northern Irish-set feature film, Broderick is currently celebrating the release of his debut feature ‘Emerald City’ on iTunes in Ireland and Amazon and iTunes in the US as of Friday 21st September.

‘Emerald City’ follows the tale of a hard living crew of Irish construction workers in New York, the only movie ever made on the Irish construction industry in the NYC. ‘Emerald City’ picked up the audience award at last year's Manhattan Film Festival and screened in various festivals from London to LA.

Speaking about ‘Emerald City’ and the loss of a close friend who was a source of inspiration on the film, Broderick added:

“I’d just like to say, given the death of my dear friend Dermot Kenny in the past week here in New York, I’d say the themes of loneliness, and depression in the working class Irish communities of Queens and the Bronx are even more on point than ever. We shot the early scenes of Emerald City on Dermot’s job site. He and I had worked together as carpenters on and off for twenty years. Emerald City is very much his story too. Rest In Peace my brother.”
