Brian and Domhnall Gleeson pen new comedy series, Frank of Ireland; Amazon and Channel 4 to co-produce

Brian and Domhnall Gleeson
Gleeson brothers, Brian and Domhnall, have teamed up for a new Channel 4 and Amazon comedy series titled, Frank of Ireland.

Consisting of six episodes, the half-hour series is co-written and executive produced by the two Irish actors alongside Michael Moloney.

According to Variety, Brian will star as the protagonist of the show, Frank Marron. Described as a 32-year-old catastrophe, Frank is further described as a misanthropic, narcissistic, fantasist in arrested development who thinks the world owes him something. But, nonetheless, he’s the show’s hero. Frank is also accompanied by his wingman Doofus (Domhnall Gleeson). Doofus foolishly thinks they are best friends and it’s his job to blow smoke up, facilitate and attempt to fix the relentless debris in Frank’s wake.

Still living at his family home in Dublin with his mother Mary (Pom Boyd), Frank is single and his pocket money hasn’t increased in a decade or more. He is a musician but hasn’t written a song or played a gig in seven years and five months. His ex-girlfriend Aine (Sarah Greene) has a new boyfriend, Peter-Brian (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) for the first time since they split, and Frank may be finding that a tad difficult.

Speaking about the news, Moloney and the Gleeson brothers said; “we’re so excited to work with MJ, Sharon, and Clelia on this, our first and (we’ve been told) last television series”.

The series was given the green light by Channel 4’s Head of Comedy, Fiona McDermott and Commissioning Editor Jack Bayles. The series will also be executive produced by Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford for Merman, while Rory Gilmartin will feature as the show's producer and MJ Delaney will direct.

The series is currently filming in Dublin and Belfast, and will feature on Channel 4 in the UK and Ireland with Amazon Prime Video debuting the show in the US, Canada, and Australia.
