SPI have issued a statement regarding the controversial decision by the national broadcaster, which was announced earlier this week.
RTÉ has been commended by SPI for its pursuit of financial efficiency in making the decision, which means turning over the budget for young people’s content to independent production and animation companies.
John Hennessy, SPI Chairman:
“We are pleased with this very positive development for the independent sector and a sign of the progressive, collaborative relationship that is developing between RTÉ and independent producers. We are pleased to hear RTE acknowledge the benefits that can be made through outsourcing programming to the independent sector. Screen Producers Ireland will work closely with RTÉ during the transition period and our members look forward to availing of this opportunity.”
Larry Bass, SPI Board Member and CEO & Founder of Shinawil:
“The independent sector welcomes RTÉs decision to commission more of the schedule from independent production companies. The sector has matured and grown to be able to handle more production hours and all necessary production skills and services exist in the sector to offer high value, quality children’s programming.”
