The Irish language documentary Violet Gibson - An tÉireannach Mná a Lámhach Mussolini (The Irish Woman who Shot Mussolini) starring Olwen Fouéré and directed by Barrie Dowdall is set to debut on TG4 next Wednesday September 22nd at 9.30pm.

The documentary is based on Violet Gibson, born in Dalkey, daughter of the Lord Chancellor. Gibson shot fascist ruler Benito Mussolini at point blank range in April 1926, three years into his rule of Italy. Out of the four assassination attempts on Mussolini, Gibson’s was the closest to success. Mussolini turned his head as she shot, resulting in the bullet grazing his nose. She went to fire again but the gun jammed.

Gibson was written off as a “madwoman” and was committed to an asylum for the rest of her life. The documentary aims to highlight the story of the free thinking Gibson who rebelled against her Anglo-Irish upbringing and committed her life to social justice and anti-fascism.

Director Barrie Dowdall said that: "I was fascinated with Violet’s story from the very beginning.  I wondered how this distinguished woman might have altered the course of world history if her pistol hadn’t jammed. I thought if she was a man she would be celebrated as a heroic visionary with a statue erected in her honor."

Barrie was inspired by a radio documentary on Gibson produced by his wife Siobhán Lynam, which won a Gold Award at the New York Festival’s Best Radio Programmes.

Dublin City Council erected a commemorative plaque honouring Violet Gibson earlier this year at her childhood home in Merrion Square, Dublin.

An English language version of the documentary was previously screened at the Dublin International Film Festival in 2020. It won Best Feature documentary at the 2020 Kerry International Film Festival, along with three awards at the Richard Harris International Film Festival.
