Second chance to see Oscar-nominated Irish animated feature as Wolfwalkers re-releases in Irish cinema

Cartoon Saloon's Wolfwalkers
Due to popular demand following Cartoon Saloon’s Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations, Wildcard Distribution has decided to once again bring Wolfwalkers to Irish cinema screens.

The film continued to play in cinemas across the UK and Northern Ireland last weekend where it has been playing since cinemas reopened last month.  The animation, which charted as the No. 1 film at the Irish box office on its opening weekend last year, was nominated for the Best Animation award at some of the world’s most prestigious awards ceremonies earlier this year including the Academy Awards®, the Golden Globes and the BAFTA’s.

Wolfwalkers is the third animated feature from the now three-time Academy Award®-nominee Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea) and Ross Stewart and is co-produced by Kilkenny-based Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions.

“After a rollercoaster ride of amazing awards nominations over the last few months for Wolfwalkers, we’re delighted that Irish audiences are getting another opportunity to see the film on the big screen again,” said co-director Tomm Moore. “We really hope that Irish families will enjoy the film in cinemas, where we always hoped it would be seen.”

Ross Stewart, co-director, added: “The return of Wolfwalkers to cinemas is bringing everyone at Cartoon Saloon great joy – it’s a really a kind of homecoming for the film after such a short release in December of last year.”

“Given that cinemas have been closed for over five months, we hope that Irish audiences embrace the film on the big screen,” said Stewart.

The film follows Robyn Goodfellowe, a young apprentice hunter who journeys to Ireland with her father in a time of superstition and magic to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

Since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, it has gone on to screen at festivals across the globe including the renowned BFI London Film Festival and garnered praise from critics and audiences alike.  It won numerous awards including the Best Animated Feature Award at some of the top US Film Critic Circle Awards including New York, Boston and Los Angeles; a Satellite Award for Best Animated or Mixed Media Feature and five Annie Awards including Best Director for Moore and Stewart and Best Independent Animated Feature.

It swept the board at this year’s Irish Animation Awards with four wins for Best Irish Feature, Best Editing, Best Art Direction and Design and Best Animation Sequence.

The Apple Original film was directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart and written by Will Collins (Song of the Sea). Paul Young, Nora Twomey, Tomm Moore and Stéphan Roelants served as producers. It follows Moore’s two prior Oscar-nominated animated features, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, as well as Cartoon Saloon’s Oscar-nominated, The Breadwinner.

An official Ireland-Luxembourg co-production, Wolfwalkers was produced with the participation of Value & Power Culture Communications Co, FIS/Screen Ireland, Film Fund Luxembourg, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, RTE, Canal +, OCS and the Pole Image Magelis, Charente Region Fund.

Wolfwalkers opens in Irish cinemas from Monday 7th June and continues to play in cinemas across the UK and Northern Ireland.
