Lorcan Finnegan’s Vivarium Secures US Deal with Saban Films

The US rights to the Irish Sci-Fi thriller starring Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg have been acquired by Saban Films.

Vivarium won the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution as part of Critics Week Competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2019 in May, where it screened in Competition as part of Critics’ Week (La Semaine de la Critique).

This is the second feature film from Irish director Lorcan Finnegan following his 2016 debut Without Name, which received its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Imogen Poots (I Kill GiantsSweet Virginia) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social NetworkCafé Society) as a young couple who follow a mysterious estate agent and get trapped in a strange housing development. The film is scripted by Garret Shanley, who also wrote the script for Finnegan’s Without Name.

Vivarium is a European co-production with Brendan McCarthy and John McDonnell producing for Dublin’s Fantastic Films along with Jean-Yves Roubin of Belgium’s Frakas Productions and Alexander Brøndsted of Denmark’s Pingpong Film, with XYZ Films executive producing and handling global sales. 

XYZ Films has also announced a raft of international sales.Among the international deals announced so far are: the UK and Ireland (Vertigo Releasing), Australia and New Zealand (Umbrella), Latin America (CDC), France (The Jokers), Scandinavia (NonStop), Italy (Notorious), Spain (A Contracorriente), South Korea (Lumix), Japan (Parco), and Middle East (Falcon).

Rights also went in: CIS (Russian World Vision), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Portugal (Films4You), Singapore (Shaw Renters), Philippines (Pioneer), Greece (Weirdwave), Ukraine (Monumental Pictures / UFD), and pan-Asia pay-TV, SVOD (FOX Networks Group Asia Pacific).

Speaking to Screen Daily, Saban Films president Bill Bromiley said: 

“We are very impressed with Lorcan’s elevated genre piece, heightened with the strong-calibre performances of Imogen and Jesse. We are looking forward to our audiences seeing this original, smart and offbeat film.”

The film is supported by Screen Ireland, Creative Europe MEDIA, Wallimage, BE TV/ VooTV, the Danish Film Institute, the Copenhagen Film Fund and Eurimages. Saban Films’ Ness Saban brokered the deal with CAA Media Finance and XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers.
