'Dublin Oldschool' Enjoys Successful Opening Weekend
05 Jul 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Following its national release to Irish cinemas last Friday, June 29th, Emmet Kirwan’s ‘Dublin Oldschool’ has opened in the sixth spot at the Irish box office.

Adapted from the hugely successful two man play of the same name, ‘Dublin Oldschool’ narrowly missing out on a Top 5 place at the box office, which is currently occupied by Universal Pictures & Warner Bros international juggernaut’s ‘Jurassic World’ & ‘Ocean’s 8’.

Aside from a successful opening box office weekend, the film has earned a number of great reviews with many expecting its popularity to rise steadily as word spreads, similar to John Connor’s box office hit ‘Cardboard Gangsters’ in 2017.  The film has already been named film of the week by the Irish Independent’s Hilary A White, while Una Mullally of The Irish Times has said that “Dublin Oldschool is set to be one of the biggest – and most important- Irish films of the year.”

Speaking about the initial success of ‘Dublin Oldschool’, Producer Dave Leahy told IFTN:

"We're really happy to finally have the film out there in front of audiences and are delighted with initial feedback over the weekend; it seems to really be resonating with people. Looking forward to watching it build over the next few days as word spreads."

Casting Director Louise Kiely added:

“I am thrilled that DUBLIN OLDSCHOOL has been received so positively. Having seen and loved the play, I was chuffed to get to work on the movie. The cast are an incredibly talented bunch plus Dave and the Guys are true gentlemen. I am super proud to be a wee part of the face of fresh Irish Film.“

'Dublin Oldschool' tells the story of Jason, a wannabe DJ, on a drug-fuelled trip through the streets of Dublin. Somewhere between the DJs, decks, and drug busts he stumbles across a familiar face from the past, his brother Daniel. An educated heroin addict, Daniel lives on the streets. The brothers haven’t seen or spoken to each other in years but over a lost weekend they reconnect and reminisce over raves, tunes and their troubled past. Two brothers living very different lives might have more in common than they think.

The film, which is adapted from the successful stage play of the same name, is directed by Dave Tynan, and co-written by Emmet Kirwan & Tynan. The film boasts a great cast that includes Emmet Kirwan (‘Heartbreak’, ‘71’), Ian Lloyd Anderson (‘Love/Hate’, ‘GoT’), Seána Kerslake (‘A Date for Mad Mary’, ‘Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope’), Sarah Greene (‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘Black 47’), Ciaran Grace (‘Love/Hate’, ‘Black 47’), and Mark O’Halloran (‘Adam & Paul’, ‘History’s Future’). The film was cast by Louise Kiely Casting.

‘Dublin Oldschool’ was produced by Warrior Films and MDV, and is being distributed by Element Pictures Distribution.
