IFTN Talks With Irish Rising Star Ryan Lincoln
08 May 2018 : Nathan Griffin
IFTN caught up with Ryan Lincoln to find out about his upcoming projects, who he has been most impressed with in the Irish industry, his background in music, and how he would love to star in a Thin Lizzy biopic directed by Jim Sheridan.

Ghanaian-Irish actor Ryan Lincoln is best known for his role in the box-office hit ‘Cardboard Gangsters’, which he starred in alongside IFTA winning actor John Connors & Fionn Walton. Lincoln has also featured alongside Dafhyd Flynn & Moe Dunford in Frank Berry’s ‘Michael Inside’, which also picked up an IFTA for ‘Best Film’ at this year’s ceremony.

Lincoln enjoyed a successful start to 2018 following the major UK & Irish success of ‘Cardboard Gangsters’ in 2017, with Frank Berry’s ‘Michael Inside’ garnering great reviews following its national release last month. Although establishing himself in the Irish industry with a number of impressive performances in supporting roles, Lincoln’s understated rise has only recently received attention with the actor picking up a nomination for the ‘Discovery Award’ at the 2018 Dublin International Film Festival earlier this year.

This nomination came due to his performance in Aoife McCardle’s dreamy neon drama ‘Kissing Candice’, which sees Lincoln, give his best performance yet. Expected out in June, ‘Kissing Candice’ will see attention turn to Lincoln who co-stars alongside fellow Irish rising-star Ann Skelly.

IFTN: What are the best and worst aspects of your work?

“The best aspect of my work is that I enjoy it so much, that it doesn’t feel like work. I enjoy the exploration and creativity that goes into constructing and discovering a character, projects that allow for some ownership of Character is definitely the highlight for me.

“The worst aspect is that work can be few and far between and often have to seek day jobs in between projects. This is the case for a lot of people in the field but again it comes back to doing it for the love of it. If you’re in this game solely for the money, there’s a good chance you’re going to get disappointed at some stage.”

IFTN: What career do you think you would have if you weren’t in the film/tv industry, and why?

“I would be inclined to go with Musician; I first started off in the Irish Hip Hop scene and am still making new stuff although film has taken the main focus for a while. Outside of Entertainment though, if I had to call it, I think that I’d be involved in youth or community work.

“I grew up going to these projects and got some great opportunities, so it would be cool to be able to give back and pass on some of the things I’ve learned. That’s definitely something I could see myself doing down the road.”

IFTN: When did you last cry watching a film? (Or come close)

“The last one I can remember was Fruitvale Station directed by Ryan Coogler. The end scene in that moment where the entire film has been building to, with Michael B. Jordan's performance was just powerful. I think that the fact that the film blends actual footage of the incident then ends on that note just reminds you that it’s a real and serious issue. Not to sound too political or anything!”

IFTN: What Irish Actor / Director would you most like to work with, and why? (Living or Dead)

“A hard one to answer, there are so many actors and directors I would work with in a heartbeat but in this moment in time I’d say the dream project would be to work with Jim Sheridan on a Thin Lizzy film.

If that ever happens, get at me Jim!”

IFTN: What are you most excited about for 2018?

“Well among a long list, I think the Release of Kissing Candice. It’s been a long time coming and is the role I’m most proud of and had the most fun doing, and where I was pushed and challenged as an actor. Nice one Aoife Mcardle! I can’t wait for people to be able to see this film and all the hard work that went in from everyone involved.”

IFTN: Who has really impressed you in the last 12 months in the Irish industry?

“Not trying to keep it in house, but when I think about it I would have to say Aoife Mcardle. As well as taking on the mammoth of a production on the catalyst scheme and doing the rounds over the post, she's still managing to do ads and other projects that are being nominate for awards before the release of her film.”

IFTN: Was there a particular scene or part you learnt by heart for auditions starting out?

“I always remember the Cardboard Gangsters audition. It was my first real audition and I had the couple of scenes well prepared and learned off but the lads put me on the spot with a bit of improv and were like "Right so now we're going to do the stabbing scene"- oh yea spoiler for anyone that hasn't seen it! I remember being caught off guard and just having to roll with it and throw myself into the scene. They must have liked it anyway because they gave me a shout!”

‘Michael Inside’ is currently in cinemas, while ‘Kissing Candice’ is expected out in June.
