Irish Composer Scores 6-part Series of Animated Films for The New York Times
16 Jan 2018 :
The Irish composer, Pierre O’Reilly, has written the scores for The New York Times’ forthcoming 6-part video series ‘Conception’ which will be released online this Thursday, 18th January 2018.

O’Reilly was initially approached in 2017 by London based animation studio, Moth, to write a score for one of the films and was subsequently asked by The New York Times to complete all six scores. He chose five Irish female artists to perform his work, recording one himself on piano: Triona O’Neill (vocal), Sarah Joyce (cello), Sinead Frost (Bassoon), Aoife Galvin (Flute) and Caoimhe de Paor (Recorder).

No two paths to motherhood are exactly alike. Through first-person accounts, the animated video series tells remarkable stories. Among them: parenting through depression, mourning a father’s death, nurturing a son’s individuality, ending a pregnancy that came too soon, and more.

Speaking about the series, O’Reilly said:

“It was crucial for me that the series’ narrative of strong women and femininity ran through all aspects of the music especially on the performance of each score.  I am lucky to know some remarkable female soloists and it was an honour to work with them on each episode. The stories, enhanced, I hope, in the telling by the music I have written, are important and powerful and I urge you to take a look.”

The ‘Conception’ series will be released this Thursday 18th January 2018 and will be available to watch online.

Pierre O’Reilly’s path to a career in music has been far from straightforward. Having served as 3rd and 2nd Navigating Officer in the Merchant Navy for over 4 years, he decided to pursue his passion of music. A graduate of the Royal College of Music and currently based in London, Pierre is a composer and producer, specialising in music for screen.  In 2013, he was the recipient of The Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medal.

An Irishman with french blood, his career to date has seen him collaborate with Academy Award nominated director, Nicky Phelan and BAFTA nominated director, Eamonn O’Neill.

He has received commissions from soloists such as multi-Classic BRIT award winner and Gramaphone Artist of Year 2013, Alison Balsom, to compose a new work for Trumpet and loop pedal receiving its premiere at the Bristol Proms.

Forthcoming projects include working with multi Grammy Award-winning orchestrator and composer, Jorge Calandrelli and the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road studios this coming summer 2018.
