John Crowley on the set of 'Brooklyn'
The ‘Brooklyn’ director is set to take on the series which will be an adaptation of Rupert Thomson’s 1987 novel of the same title.

Crowley is set to helm the series, which will consist of six-eight episodes, based on a script from ‘The Sense of an Ending’ screenwriter Nick Payne.

See-Saw Films is set to produce, the outfit best known for ‘Top of The Lake’ starring ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ actress Elizabeth Moss.

Synopsis
Dreams Of Leaving is set in the fictional English village of New Egypt; an idyllic haven of traditional values and attitudes. However, by resisting change with an iron fist it has secretly made prisoners of its inhabitants. Moses is one villager who escaped the village as a boy and has grown up in contemporary London. Questioning his identity, he begins to unearth chilling secrets of his past that will lead him back to the village of his birth.

Jamie Laurenson, Head of Television, See-Saw Films:
“Dreams Of Leaving has parallels with the way we feel we’re living now, with a divided society, the notions of what is a safe space, what is home, what is national identity and paranoia about immigrants.

“It speaks to contemporary themes but at its heart is a very powerful, interesting thriller about personal identity. It’s a brilliant book and great world. John and Nick are bringing a vision to that material.”

This is not the first adaptation taken on by Crowley; 2015 title ‘Brooklyn’ starring Saoirse Ronan is based on the novel from Colm Tóibín and was adapted for the screen by Nick Hornby (Wild). The adaptation earned Hornby an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay, in addition to Ronan’s nomination for Best Actress and the overall nomination for Best Motion Picture of the Year.

The upcoming ‘The Goldfinch’, which has yet to enter production, is also an adaptation of Donna Tartt’s acclaimed novel, with ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ writer Peter Straughan taking on the task of adapting the work for the screen.
