TV Services Direct to Your Mobile for Some Irish Customers
25 Apr 2017 :
After Government plans to broaden the legal definition of “television set” were rumoured at the end of March. The news that larger screen tablet and laptop devices will soon have to buy a TV licence, looks to have set the ball rolling for some Irish TV operators looking to start offering their TV services direct to customer’s phone screens.

In a recent article in the Irish Independent it is reported that two of Ireland’s three biggest TV operators eir (63,000 customers) and Sky (700,000 customers) are looking to offer services to their customers that will allow them to watch television content direct to their mobile device screens without having to pay for a TV licence.

eir recently announced plans that its Meteor mobile customers who are part of the eir family can enjoy free access to eir Sport, which allows them to watch all Premier League, Champions League & Europa League action as well as Allianz Hurling & Football Leagues, F1, Golf, UFC and more for free and on the go without eating into their data allowance via the new eir Sport Just mobile app.

TV operator Sky is set to launch a new TV service in Ireland aimed at phones and tablets that could see its customers’ watch television without paying for a TV licence. 'Now TV', which is run by Sky and available in the UK, will feature movies, sport and live television. It offers monthly 'passes' with access to Sky Sport, Sky Movies, ordinary live channels or kids' television stations. In the UK, customers pay £3 per month for the service.

It is reported that almost one in 10 households in Ireland no longer have a traditional television set, but many are still accessing content over the internet. The majority of Irish people are now said to watch video on their mobiles, while the rise of on-demand services such as Netflix, Sky Go, YouTube and the RTÉ Player are pulling viewers away from scheduled television services.

The new plans by the Irish Government to broaden the legal definition of the “television set” being proposed by Communications Minister Denis Naughten would allow the annual TV license fee to be applicable to computers, laptops and large laptops.
