BAFTA Television Awards Nominees Announced

The Secret starring James Nesbitt, filmed in Northern Ireland is nominated for Best Mini-Series
The nominations have been announced for the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards, which reward the very best in television broadcast on British screens in 2016. This year’s ceremony will be held at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 14 May.

Historical drama The Crown, which features the talents of Irish Editor Úna Ní Dhonghaile leads the way receiving five nominations including Leading Actress for Claire Foy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II and is also up for Best Drama Series.

Irish editor Úna Ní Dhonghaile worked on two episodes of The Crown in the first series, episode 6 (Scientia Potential Est) & episode 7 (Gelignite). Úna has previously been BAFTA & IFTA nominated for her editing work on television series such as Ripper Street, Doctor Who, The Missing and White Girl.

Also up for Best Drama Series alongside The Crown is Sally Wainwright’s crime drama Happy Valley which features the acting talents of Irish and IFTA 2017 award winning Actress (in a supporting role in Drama), Charlie Murphy. Irish talent Neasa Hardiman (Z: The Beginning of Everything) is also nominated for her work as director on Happy Valley, another IFTA nominee who appeared on the red carpet of the Mansion House in Dublin at the weekend.

The Secret starring James Nesbitt is nominated for Best Mini-Series. The true-life murder drama filmed in Northern Ireland, see’s Nesbitt return to his hometown to play Colin Howell the religious dentist from Coleraine who had an affair with a Sunday school teacher Hazel Buchanan played by Irish actress Genevieve O’Reilly. The two then conspired to murder both their partners and make it look like a double suicide.

The ever charismatically charming Irish chat show host Graham Norton received a nomination for Best Entertainment Performance for his BBC series The Graham Norton Show. He is nominated alongside; Adam Hills’ The Last Leg, Claudia Winkleman’s Strictly Come Dancing and Michael Mc Intyre’s Big Show

The nominations for the publicly-voted Virgin TV’s Must See Moment see’s Game of Thrones: Battle of the Bastards scene nominated alongside; The Late Late Show with James Corden: Carpool Karaoke with Michelle Obama, Line of Duty: Urgent Exit Required, Planet Earth II: Snakes vs Iguana Chase, Strictly Come Dancing: Ed Balls’ Gangnam Style and Who Do You Think You Are?: Danny Dyer’s Origins.
