Course Profile:
This course, a collaboration between Galway Film Centre, Gréasán na Meán Skillnet and Screen Training Ireland, will cover each stage of the script supervision process from prep to production to post. It will also include practical exercises with actors. Please note, participants will be required to do assignments in their own time, outside of course hours.
The course takes place over 5 days: Saturday & Sunday February 25th and 26th; Saturday March 4th (Ros na Rún); and Saturday & Sunday March 11th & 12th.
Topics covered will include:
Prep:
- Duties and expectations: An outline of what responsibility falls on the shoulders of the script supervisor and – just as importantly – what is not a script supervisor’s responsibility.
- On-set roles: A brief outline of who does what on set and how a script supervisor will interact with them.
- Timing a script: Who is it for & why do script supervisors do it? Method for timing.
- Story Days: What are story days? Who uses them? Method for breaking a script down into story days.
- Dates / Time of Day (TOD)
Method for coming up with the timeline breakdown for a script – Including practical.
- Breakdown: Method for breaking down a script and the breakdowns that are expected from production and other departments – including practical exercises.
Production:
- Continuity: What to look for when at the monitors.
- Editor’s Log: Details required.
- Facing Pages: What is included?
- Lining a script: Method used to line a script.
- Eye Lines and ‘The Line’: What is the line? How to maintain it. Crash course in eye lines
- Working with cast & crew: How to broach certain subjects and how to deal with difficult situations that arise.
- Camera & Lenses
- Slating
Becoming familiar with the tools of the trade.
- Daily Progress Reports: Info required. Where to get this info. Method – including practical exercises.
Post:
- Wrap Reports: Final package hand off to the editor.
Upon completion of this course, participants may have the opportunity to avail of a supported placement position on a production, in order to provide further practical training and skills application.
Participant Profile:
This course is aimed at trainee script supervisors and those with production experience who wish to work in script supervision.
