Minister Humphreys calls for a lasting legacy from Centenary Commemorations
28 Jul 2016 :
The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Thursday) said that she wants to build a lasting legacy from this year’s 1916 Centenary Commemorations.

Minister Humphreys was speaking in Dublin Castle where she hosted a major workshop as part of the Reimagining strand of Ireland 2016.

Today’s meeting was attended by representatives of Government Department and Agencies, Local Authorities, Cultural Institutions, artists and others who participated in this year’s programme of events to date.

Speaking today Minister Humphreys said:

“The Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme has been a great success , thanks to the way in which communities right across this country embraced and shaped the commemorations. We gave free rein to ambition in 2016 – we got everyone involved – and then they did it for themselves. All we did really was create the possibility and then trusted people to get on with it themselves; which they did to an astonishing degree.

“Collaboration and community involvement have been the hallmark of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme. I want us to say proudly that this year, in 2016, we have all shown what can be achieved when creativity is unleashed. By building on the legacy of Ireland 2016 we can illustrate our commitment and appreciation for our arts, our culture and our heritage.

“I want to build on the huge level of cultural engagement that we have experienced this year and use that as a positive platform for the future. This will complement the work being carried out by my Department as we begin developing an implementation plan for Culture 2025, our first national cultural strategy. This is coming at a very good time, as we seek to build on the positive momentum of the commemorations.

“Today’s workshop was a great opportunity to hear what many of the participants today felt were the highlights of this year’s commemorations; the involvement of all age groups, particularly children; community engagement from local to national level; the participation of our Defence Forces; the unique contribution made by our arts and cultural sectors. Most of all, I was heartened by the overall sense of pride felt by so many people at the nature of the commemorations – pride in our country and pride in the dignified and inclusive manner in which the commemorations were conducted.

“The entire commemorative programme flourished as a ground up initiative, led by local communities bringing their own expertise and talents to their local areas. The tally of local community events held as part of the programme has now reached 3,500, far beyond anything that any of us could have imagined just a year ago. I feel that it is vital that this level of community engagement is built upon as a positive legacy for the future.”
