TG4 to be Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oireachtas na Gaeilge Irish Language Media Awards

TG4, the Irish language television station, is to receive the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Oireachtas na Gaeilge Irish Language Media Awards. This award is to mark the stations 20th anniversary and will be presented by President Michael D Higgins at a glittering ceremony in Galway on May 13th.

Since its inception, TG4 has become a highly respected media outlet and has been recognized nationally and internationally for its high standard of innovative programming. Based in Baile na hAbhann in Connemara, TG4 defied the skepticism that accompanied it’s launch by providing Irish viewers with a range of popular TV programmes that displayed the talents of Irish speaking casts and crews. It has carved out a distinctive niche with its quirky approach, high quality documentaries and drama and an ambitious sports output.

“TG4 is at the core of the Irish language community in Ireland”, said Liam O Maolaodha, CEO of Oireachtas na Gaeilge. “During its 20 years, the station has provided Irish speakers with a platform to display their creativity and their unique outlook. It brings our language, our arts and our stories to the four corners of the world. This was an easy decision and we’re delighted to present this award,” he said.

These annual media awards celebrate achievements and excellence in the Irish language media sector and honour actors, journalists, presenters, programme makers and others within the sector who have excelled in their contributions in the last year.

“As TG4 finalises plans to mark our 20th Birthday next Halloween, this special media award from Oireachtas na Gaeilge is particularly heartening for our own team and for our content creators in the independent production sector throughout Ireland”, says Pól Ó Gallchóir, Ard-Stiúrthóir TG4. “Following on directly from our recent prizes at IFTA, CIRCOM and the Celtic Media Festival, it is both a validation from our core audience at home and abroad, of the high quality of our programmes and an inspiration for the future,” he said.

The Oireachtas na Gaeilge Irish Language Media Awards will be hosted by RTÉ newscaster, Aengus Mac Grianna, in the Salthill Hotel, Galway, on Friday May 13th.
