Irish films nominated at BAFTA 2016: 'Brooklyn', 'Room', 'The Lobster' and 'The Survivalist'

The 2016 BAFTA Film Awards have been announced with Irish film 'Brooklyn' picking up six nominations and there were also nominations for 'Room', 'Brooklyn', 'The Lobster' and 'The Survivalist'.

The nominations for ‘Brooklyn’ were in the categories of Outstanding British Film (John Crowley, Finola Dwyer, Amanda Posey, Nick Hornby), Saoirse Ronan for Lead Actress, Julie Walters for Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay (Nick Hornby), Costume Design (Odile Dicks-Mireaux) and Makeup & Hair (Morna Ferguson, Lorraine Glynn). 'Brooklyn’ is produced by Wildgaze Films, Finola Dwyer Productions, Parallel Films and Item 7 and was funded by the Irish Film Board, the BAI, RTÉ, BBC, Telefilm and the BFI and tells the story of a young Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York whose blossoming relationship with an Italian plumber is threatened when tragedy calls her home. She returns to Ireland where her attraction for a charming local man grows

‘Room’ received two nominations - Brie Larson for Lead Actress and Emma Donoghue for Adapted Screenplay. ‘Room’ is directed by Lenny Abrahamson and produced by Element Pictures and No Trace Camping with funding from the Irish Film Board and is told through the eyes of a five year old who is held captive in a room along with his mother.

'The Lobster' (Yorgos Lanthimos, Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, Efthimis Filippou) is nominated for Outstanding British Film.

Following on from her SAG and Golden Globe nominations, ‘Brooklyn’ actress Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for Best Leading Actress for her performance as a young Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York who is torn between two men and two countries. The young actress has so far picked up a New Hollywood Award, a New York Critics Circle Best Actress Award and a BIFA Award.

Nominated alongside Saoirse is ‘Room’ actress Brie Larson, who has been garnering unanimous praise for her performance as a woman escaping captivity after seven years with her young son in Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’. Larson is also nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award this year. Both Ronan and Larson are also seen as front-runners for Oscar nominations.

Also building on a very impressive awards season run, Michael Fassbender has been nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his critically lauded role in Danny Boyle’s ‘Steve Jobs’. Fassbender, capping off a busy year which included lead roles in ‘Slow West’ and ‘Macbeth’ has so far received both SAG and Golden Globe nominations as well as an International Star Award at Palm Springs.

Stephen Fingleton is nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his debut feature 'The Survivalist', which is released on 12th February in Ireland. The film stars Martin McCann.

The EE British Academy Film Awards will take place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden on Sunday, February 14th.
