Clones Film Festival launch 48 Hour Short Film Challenge

Clones Film Festival 2015, in association with Clones Credit Union Ltd., has just launched its annual 48 Hour Short Film Challenge. The challenge invites filmmakers, writers and crew to script, prep, scout locations, cast, rehearse, film, edit and present a finished short film in just 48 hours.

Each team will be given a budget of €400 to cover all expenses - transport, phones, art dept., photocopying, costumes, make-up, catering, etc. Accommodation is not provided but festival organisers will provide assistance with seeking accommodation if necessary. The rest: location permissions, cast, props etc. is up to you. Clones Film Festival will provide a production assistant who will liaise with the teams and act in an advisory capacity.

Interested production teams are invited to submit a detailed proposal of the film they wish to make (max. 200 words). Films can be any genre - drama, documentary, stop-motion animation, though it must be feasible to shoot in one day with a skeleton crew. Feasibility will be taken into account when proposals are judged.

Films must be at least three minutes long and no longer than nine minutes. They must be completed over the weekend (Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October). Deadline for receipt of the finished films is 12 midday on Sunday 25 October. All filmmakers must be able to attend the 'Francies' award ceremony on the closing night of the festival, Sunday 25 October.

Deadline for entries is 5th October and entries and proposals must be submitted by e-mail. Submissions will be acknowledged within 24 hours.

Send your proposal, team name and C.V. or credits of your proposed project’s director/producer, camera operator, editor and any other key crew to Seamie at info@clonesfilmfestival.com.

Dublin Animation Film Festival announce guest speakers

Dublin Animation Film Festival, (DAFF) Ireland’s only film festival dedicated solely to animation has announced its programme of guest speakers.

Dublin Animation Film Festival is an annual event designed to celebrate both national and international animators and is five years old this year. The festival will take place this year on the 16th and 17th October 2015 at IADT (Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology) and the Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laoghaire.

The first day of the festival will focus on guest lectures at IADT, and screenings and the DAFF 2015 Awards ceremony will take place at The Pavilion Theatre on the 17th October.

Festival Director Fionnghuala Ni Neill graduated with an MA in Film Studies from UCD in 2001. She worked in theatre and film and while she was working on her environmental short films she saw the need for greater supports for fringe film-makers.

With the support of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, the Local Enterprise Board, and her passion for film she started the first animation film festival in Blackrock in 2011. The festival received 45 entries and was held in Blackrock until 2013. As it grew in size and popularity, it rebranded and became the Dublin Animation Film Festival in 2014 attracting some of the biggest names in film animation. The opening film of the new festival was the Irish premiere of 'Cheatin' by Academy Award nominee, Bill Plympton at the Pavilion Theatre.

This year, the Dublin Animation Film Festival welcomes Tomm Moore, co-creator of Cartoon Saloon to the screening of their Oscar nominated feature ‘Song of the Sea’. Guest speakers include Damien O’Connor – Brown Bag Films Dublin, Nelson Lowry – Laika Studios, Portland, Oregan, Ian Mackinnon – Mackinnon and Saunders, UK and Michele Chiappa – Karrot Animation, UK.

Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival programme launch

Documentaries by women is one of the themes of this year’s Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival which takes place at Headfort House and in Kells, County Meath on 2-4 October.

A record number of international and Irish directors will be in attendance at the festival, among them some of the current leading women filmmakers to present their films and share their expertise.

Internationally-acclaimed director Kim Longinotto will be there to talk about her latest film, ‘Dreamcatcher’, which focuses on Brenda Myers-Powell, a former prostitute who runs the Dreamcatcher Foundation, which is helping young women in Chicago break the cycle of violence and sexual exploitation.

One of the highlights of this year’s programme is the multi-award winning ‘Something Better to Come’, in which Polish film-maker, Hanna Polak follows the life of 10- year-old Yula, who lives on a landfill site on the outskirts of Moscow, through her teen years into adulthood.

Guth Gafa will also welcome German film-maker, Helen Simon who will present her award-winning film, ‘No Lullaby’ which unveils a tough but compelling story of intergenerational child abuse and the tragic consequence of disclosure.

French filmmaker, Laurent Becue-Renard whose deeply affecting film ‘Of Men and War’ takes a tough look at the impact of PTSD on a group of US veterans who fought in Iraq will be at the festival.

This film won Best Feature Doc at IDFA and a special Jury Award at San Francisco Film Festival and was nominated for the European Film Awards.
