Irish Companies gear up for MIPCOM and MIPJunior

MIPCOM season is upon us again and there will be a strong Irish contingent present at the global entertainment market in Cannes when it kicks off on October 13th , as well as at MIPJunior which runs from 11th-12th October.

The Irish Film Board is partnering with Enterprise Ireland, on the IRELAND ON SCREEN stand, promoting a wide range of Irish-made content, including ‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘Vikings’ and ‘Ripper Street’, while Northern Ireland Screen has planned a networking lunch on Tuesday 14th October where they will detail how they plan to invest across a range of priority areas over the next four years including large scale production, animation, television drama, independent film, Irish language projects, factual entertainment television and gaming, mobile, e-learning and web content.

Here, IFTN analyses some of these Irish companies to find out what their key aims are at this year’s market place.

Aertv

Aertv is Ireland’s leading OTT provider of linear channels and amateur sports programming. They are at Cannes negotiating the OTT distribution of new channels in Ireland. This is the first year that MIPCOM is devoting a full day to the digital distribution of channels – something that Aertv have lobbied them on for the past few years

Aertv does something unique in the Irish marketplace – something that is cutting edge for MIPCOM and the traditional TV market. As content owners begin to experiment with new technology, digital channels are beginning to proliferate without the insistence of being carried on terrestrial retransmission networks. This new market opens a wide array of opportunities for content owners and Aertv will be at MIPCOM looking to develop their channel offering around that.

Indee Productions

Indee Productions combines the talents of an experienced team in the creation of stories across television and digital platforms. The company has strong credentials in documentary and digital storytelling and has a strong slate of kid’s shows in development. Key credits include ‘Bia Linn’, a colourful kids cookery show with a mixed bag of ingredients, and the second series is due to air on December 2nd. The company also has strong credentials in documentary and digital storytelling and has a strong slate of kids’ shows in development.

They will be bringing preschool series ‘Pablo’ to MIP. This production mixes live action and 2D animation for 52 x 7minute fantastic adventures. The 5½ year-old hero Pablo (an artist on the autism spectrum) uses his magic crayons to turn his life challenges into fantastic adventures and his feelings into colourful characters with a voice, in order to face the real world with confidence.

Scheduled to travel to MIP are producer/directors Gavin Halpin and Grainne McGuinness.

JAM Media

JAM Media is one of the leading creators and producers of multi-award winning animated and live action content for the children’s and pre-school audience. The company has produced a number of original television series including the BAFTA® winning ‘Roy’, ‘Baby Jake’, ‘Picme’ and ‘Tilly & Friends’ and enjoys excellent collaborative relationships with key broadcasters and ‘like-minded’ partners around the globe.

JAM Media will be bringing ‘Picme’,‘Roy’,‘Little Roy’ and ‘Peckles’ to MIP with ‘Picme’ and ‘Roy’ looking for sales while ‘Little Roy’ and ‘Peckles’ will be looking for financing.

Representing the company at MIP will be CEO / Executive Producer John Rice, Chief Commercial Officer, John Reynolds and Head of Development Chris Dicker.

Monster Entertainment

Monster Entertainment, who always have their own stand P-1.J64 at MIPCOM and MIPTV, is a brand management company which develops entertainment brands and distributes them worldwide. While Monster handles a diverse range of programming in the areas of children’s programming, music and documentaries, the core business is mainstream children’s animation. Monster’s strategy is to build a number of long-running series into multi-platform brands through ensuring the widest possible distribution and ancillary exploitation.

Monster Entertainment is bringing two Danish produced series from Tiny Film to MIPJunior. The second series of ‘Originalos’ is ready for delivery and the second series for ‘Tiny Square Critters’ is being produced. Monster will be also launching three non-dialogue series ‘Luchien’ (26x1min), ‘FlipFlap’ (25x4min) and ‘Hullabalooba’ (13x5min) at MIPJunior. All three titles are for children between 4 to 8 years old. They will also be bringing ‘Pip Ahoy!’ (52x11min) the number 1 kids show in the UK and ‘Rocka-Bye Island’ (26x11min). These are seven of 18 titles, mostly brand new, that Monster will be screening in Cannes. It is a record number of titles in the history of Monster’s attendance at MIPJunior.

Representing Monster at Cannes will be Chairman Andrew Fitzpatrick, Senior Sales Executive Laura Doyle, Senior Sales Executive Ania Rozenszprung-Clinton and Rhona O’Kelly from Marketing and Creating.

Network Ireland Television

Network Ireland Television has become the foremost independent TV programme and film distributor in Ireland, dedicated to providing the best in contemporary film and TV programming for international audiences.

The company will be launching several titles at MIPCOM:

Series

  • ‘Science Squad 3’: The latest in this entertaining series on the current trends in scientific research.
  • ‘Rankin Presents Collabor8te’: The Short Film Series: Four episodes featuring two short films each, with celebrity photographer Rankin interviewing the creatives involved.
  • ‘Highland Midwives’: This unique series follows midwives based in the rugged highlands and islands of Scotland
  • Also in production is ‘Celebrity Obsessed’. This new series, to be completed in 2015, exploits the disturbing phenomenon of obsessive stalking of celebrities.

Single Docs

  • ’The Irish Pub’: This acclaimed film is a celebration of one of the greatest institutions in Irish society, the Public House.
  • ’It Came From Connemara!!’ Documenting Legendary Hollywood B movie producer, Roger Corman who opened a studio in Connemara in the mid 1990’s, producing almost 20 films in 5 years
  • ’Blood Rising’: The families of the femicide victims of Juarez have bravely chosen to openly express their emotions through the work of Irish artist Brian Maguire, as a last resort to finding justice.

Docu Drama

Convict Women and Orphans’: For over 50 years in the early 19th century over 10,000 Irish women and girls were transported to Australia as bonded labour. This four part series tells the story of how these forced emigrants became founding mothers of the Australia of today.

Library Titles

The Little Bird catalogue contains 50 hours of quality films, TV drama series and documentaries that is now available again. Classic series like ‘The Irish R.M’, ‘The Hanging Gale’, ‘No Tears’, ‘Relative Strangers’ and ‘The Irish Empire’ are included in this library.

Managing Director Derry O Brien will be representing the company at MIPCOM.

RTÉ Global

RTÉ Global is the programme sales, format and distribution division of the Irish public broadcaster, RTÉ Television. They help Ireland’s most creative producers find international audiences for their content.

RTÉ Global’s focus this year is on selling television programmes and formats, continuing relationships with Distributors and looking for co-production opportunities.

Salty Dog Pictures

Salty Dog Pictures was set up in early 2013 by Director and Producer team Cliff Parrott and Deirdre Barry to develop, finance and produce original animation and live action programming, as well as to work with international partners on co-productions and service work.

Salty Dog Pictures are bringing some projects they have currently in development to MIPCOM this year including:

  • ’Lily & Dandy’- 3D Animated Pre-School Series, 26 x 11minutes. They are looking for co-producers and broadcasters for ‘Lily and Dandy’ at MIPCOM.
  • ’P.A.L.S’- Mixed Media (2D Traditional Animation, CGI and live action elements) Comedy Adventure, 52 x 11 minutes aimed at kids aged 6 to 11. They are looking for co-producers for ‘P.A.L.S’. at MIPCOM. ‘Monster Hunters’- 25 x 5minutes Mixed Media (2D Animation & Live Action) mystery thriller aimed at kids aged 6 to 11. They are looking for finance and broadcasting partners at MIPCOM.

The company also have live action projects for which they are looking for co-production partners.

Deirdre Barry, CEO, and Cliff Parrott, Creative Director will represent Salty Dog Pictures at Cannes.

Sideline

Repped internationally by ICM Partners, Sideline is one of Ireland’s brightest production companies currently producing (with Group M Entertainment) ‘Great British Castles’ for Channel 5; ‘The Great Irish Bake Off’ series 3 and ‘Paul Kelly – Masterclass’ both for TV3 and in active development on a host of scripted and non-scripted projects for UK and Irish broadcasters.

Their 6 hour series ‘Tales of Irish Castles’ will be sold by DCD Rights at MIPCOM. Hosted by Simon Delaney and produced for TV3 & the BAI, the distribution advance was one of the largest ever paid for an Irish produced factual series. Sideline are also pitching produced & developed formats as well as new shows.

Travelling to MIP from SIDELINE will be Creative Director and Owner Billy McGrath and Head of Development David Noble.

Sixteen South

Sixteen South make quality television for children all over the world. Their current top-rated show ‘Lily’s Driftwood Bay’ features the adventures of Lily who creates a world of adventure and friendship from different treasure she finds washed up on the beach. Other previous shows include 'Pajanimals' in partnership with the Jim Henson Company and Sprout, ‘Big & Small’ in partnership with Kindle Entertainment and the BBC, ‘Big City Park’ co-produced with BBC Scotland and ‘Sesame Tree’, a version of ‘Sesame Street’ made entirely in Northern Ireland in partnership with Sesame Workshop.

Sixteen South are bringing ‘Claude’ a 52x11 minute animated series for boys and girls aged 4-6 to Cannes. ‘Claude’ is based on the highly successful series of books by Alex T. Smith. They are in early pre-production on the project with 22% of the finance left to close and are looking for pre-sales and finance opportunities to close this gap.

They are also bringing series two of their current mixed-media animated pre-school show ‘Lily’s Driftwood Bay’. Series one is already a top rated show on Nick Jr in the UK, on Sprout in the US and on ABC in Australia. It has also been sold in over 20 other territories and is being sold throughout the world by The Jim Henson Company. The company have received the green light for a second series from the show’s current broadcasters and are looking to secure more acquisitions at MIPCOM.

Creative Director Colin Williams and Development Producer Michelle Forde will be representing Sixteen South at MIP.

Tile Films

Tile Films is one of Ireland's leading television production companies, specialising in high-end, entertaining and informative documentaries on history, religion, archaeology, culture and people. Past productions include ‘Sacred Sites: Ireland’, ‘Áille an Uafáis/A Terrible Beauty’, ‘Death on the Railroad’, ‘Saving the Titanic’, ‘Waterways: The Royal Canal’, ‘Fag an Bealach/Clear the Way’ and ‘Decoding Christianity’.

The principal projects that they are bringing to MIPCOM are:

  • ’After Braveheart’, 2x1 hour docudrama series revealing the untold story of how a Scottish army tried to drive the English out of Ireland 700 years ago. (Completed July 2014)
  • ’Waterloo’s Warriors’, 2x1 hour docudrama series telling the tale of the non-English soldiers that helped defeat Napoleon at Waterloo. (Due for delivery May 2015)
  • Death or Liberty’, 2x1 hour docudrama series detailing the journey into the lives of the political prisoners who helped found the modern democracy of Australia (Due for delivery July 2015)
  • ’Sacred Sites of the World’, 6x1 hour documentary series which offers unique new insights on some of the world’s most hallowed shrines, temples and monuments. (Episode one completed July 2014 with a further five episodes due for delivery January 2016)

Representing Tile Films at MIPCOM will be Managing Director Stephen Rooke and Head of Development David Ryan.

The four day networking event MIPCOM will commence on Monday, 13th October and run through until Thursday, 16th October whilst MIPJunior will run from Saturday, 11th October until Sunday, 12th October.
