‘Our Island’ on TV3 Tonight
08 Oct 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
In a new four part factual series, ‘Our Island’, will explore Ireland’s maritime heritage, looking at those who have shaped the island’s coastline and been shaped by it. ‘Our Island’ looks at Ireland’s shoreline, its people, industries, history and wildlife.

Presented by Dick Warner, each of the films deals with one province and one season. Putting 7,500 kilometres of coastline into four films produces an informative and aesthetic series that explores fascinating human stories through a mixture of expert commentary, storytelling and unique photography.

By focusing on one province at a time, each part of the series is distinctive and consistent. The approach, both visually and editorially, will be consistent across the series, yet the films will reflect the essence of Ulster (tonight), Leinster (15th October), Munster (22nd October) and Connaught (30th October) individually.

This series covers a range of tales spanning thousands of years. There will be priests, pirates, sorcery, and world war, but often it is the coast itself that is the star of the show, acting as a crucial backdrop to every story. It is the wide mudflats, sand dunes, wild storm ravaged cliffs and the ever present expanse of the sea that makes us an island in the first place.

‘Our Island’ was produced by Lucia Gavin and edited by Derek Pelly at Reelgood Facilities. The striking cinematography was achieved by Stephen J. Hart, and the sound department included Geraint Davies on location sound and John Williams on post-production sound. Shane Dunphy wrote the original music.

Midas Productions is one of Ireland’s largest production companies with over one hundred productions for Irish television to date. Previously broadcast documentary titles include 'Inside Probation', ‘Women on the Inside’, ‘Life on the Inside’, ‘Home from Home’, ‘The Park’, ‘A Fighting Heart’, and ‘Fintan O’Toole: Power Plays’.

The first episode of ‘Our Island’ airs tonight on TV3 at 10pm.
