OFFLine Film Festival releases 2014 Programme
22 Sep 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The OFFline Film Festival, taking place this 8th-12th October, has released its programme for the year 2014. Now in its fifth year, the Offaly-based film festival will once again see a number of short and feature film screenings as well as workshops available for its five day run.

Almost 600 filmmakers from over 52 countries submitted their films for consideration this year (read more here). The films shown will be screened for free over two evenings, with one programme dedicated to Irish short films and another to international shorts. The Irish shorts will be screened on Friday 10th October at 7pm in The Chestnut, while the international programme will be shown at 5pm and 7pm on Saturday evening at Spinners on Castle Street.

The short films selected for the Irish programme are touching animation ‘Anya’, multi award-winning ‘Coda’, ‘The Weather Report’ starring Liam Cunningham, ‘Still Can’t Hear Her Mouth’, ‘I am Jesus’, ‘Luke’, ‘An Cat’, ‘Waterway’, ‘Suanscéal’, ‘I’ve Been a Sweeper’ and ‘Deadly’.

Opening night will see the world premiere of ‘The Iron Man’, a documentary following Irish artist and poet Michael Thatcher’s battle with terminal cancer. The evening will include a reception and an exhibition of selected artworks by Michael Thatcher.

‘Unbreakable: The Mark Pollock Story’ is another Irish documentary that will be screened as part of the festival. The extraordinary story follows a man who, having lost his sight in his early twenties, goes on to become the first blind person to race to the South Pole. Later, an accident leaves him paralysed from the waist down. The film is directed by Ross Whitaker (‘When Ali Came to Ireland’) and the screening, which takes place on Thursday 9th October, is followed by a Q&A with Whitaker and Pollack.

International features to be screened include ‘Populaire’, ‘Sitting Next to Zoe’, ‘Othello’, ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’, ‘Saving Mr Banks’, ‘Ilo Ilo’, ‘We are the Best!’, ‘Dirty Dancing’ and ‘The Lego Movie’.

OFFline will also include a workshop in Special Effects Make Up & Prosthetics hosted by Julie Ann Ryan, a variety of animation workshops facilitated by Paper Panther Productions, a tailored Sensory Screening for children with autism at IMC Tullamore, Parent & Baby Screenings at Birr Library, and screenings for school children at libraries all over Offaly.

This year’s programme will also include a focys on Offaly filmmakers and their work, a first for the film festival. A highlight of the Festival, the OFFline Filmmaking Challenge, will see teams from all over Europe arrive in Birr to shoot and screen their short films in less than 60 hours.
