Filmbase has announced that the second round of the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Award 2014 is now open. The deadline is 5pm Friday 26th September 2014.

Filmbase and RTÉ are seeking Ireland’s most exciting new filmmaking talent and will support four short film projects with funding and facilities worth up to €20,000 each in 2014. New and established filmmakers are welcome to apply and the short film projects can be live-action, animation or experimental.

Running for over 20 years now, the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Award Scheme aims to provide new and emerging Irish filmmakers with an opportunity to make their first short films. Since the inception of the Filmbase/RTÉ award over 120 short films have been funded through the scheme.

Successful applicants for the awards receive up to €10,000 in cash towards the production budget for their film. Each production also receives access to film production equipment and editing facilities from Filmbase to a matching value of €10,000 along with advice and support for making the films. The shorts will be broadcast on RTÉ and filmmakers are encouraged to submit the film to festivals both in Ireland and abroad. Filmbase/RTÉ funded short films have a long track record of festival success, including screenings at Cannes, Sundance, Palm Springs, Berlin and Clermont-Ferrand.

The emphasis in the Filmbase/RTÉ scheme is on the quality of the creative ideas; for the initial application entrants are only required to submit a script therefore projects are shortlisted on the basis of the script alone. Those shortlisted will be invited to interview at which stage additional information (budget, schedule etc.) about the project will be sought. The deadline for the second round of the award this year is 5pm Friday 26th September 2014. Up to two awards will be made in this round.

The deadline has also been announced for the next round of Reel Art, the Arts Council scheme designed to provide film artists with a unique opportunity to make highly creative, imaginative and experimental documentaries on an artistic theme. The deadline for Reel Art applications is Friday 17th October 2014 at 5pm.

Reel Art will support two films with grants of €70-80,000 per project. Reel Art films will be premiered at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2016.

The Arts Council’s purpose in offering Reel Art is to support film artists to make documentary art films that would not otherwise get made. The scheme offers film artists a unique opportunity to make artistic film works on arts subjects. Projects should be conceived for theatrical exhibition at film festivals and in arthouse/cultural cinema settings. Only proposals for original, imaginative and aesthetically-driven treatments of arts subjects will be considered while proposals that offer visually engaging, creative and experimental approaches to their subject will be prioritised.

Filmmakers interested in applying to the scheme are invited to attend an information session which will help clarify the purpose and priorities of the award and answer filmmaker questions on the scheme. The information session will be held at 3pm on Tuesday 17th September at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival new offices at 13 Lower Ormond Quay. Places should be reserved in advance and attendees are asked to email their interest in attending to reelart@filmbase.ie.

The deadline for Applications is 5pm, Friday 17th October 2014.

See filmbase.ie for more on each scheme.
