Irish Film & TV Industry at Comic-Con 2014

Comic-Con 2014 kicked off yesterday with more than 130,000 people attending the event in San Diego. The four day festival, celebrating comic books, film, TV, video games and more, will see studios present previews of their latest projects. The convention goes on until Sunday.

Last night a panel on ‘Penny Dreadful’, which was filmed in Dublin with a number of Irish crew members involved in its production, was held last night. The panel saw creator John Logan, and stars Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney and Harry Treadaway involved in a Q&A. Following the announcement that ‘Penny Dreadful’ has been renewed for a second season, Logan dropped a number of hints for the new season at the Q&A, saying it would feature “a much more threatening supernatural world” and that the characters will be explored in more depth.

Later today, ‘Game of Thrones’ author and executive producer George RR Martin expected to announce the casting for season five of the hit HBO fantasy drama which is filmed in Northern Ireland. There will also be a Q&A with showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and the stars of the show, including Maisie Williams, Gwendoline Christie, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, John Bradley, Rory McCann, Pedro Pascal, Leslie and Irish actress Natalie Dormer.

Another highly anticipated event is the ‘Vikings’ panel, the hit History channel series which is currently filming its third season in Northern Ireland. All the major players in the series will be present for the Q&A of the event. This includes Travis Fimmel, Katheryn Winnick, Clive Standen, Alexander Ludwig, showrunner Michael Hirst and History Channel executive Julian Jobbs. The panel will take place today, and there will be an exclusive ‘Vikings’ season 3 sneak peek screened at the event.

The presence of Irish acting talent will also be at the Comic-Con. At the ‘Orphan Black’ panel event, Dublin-born actress Maria Doyle Kennedy (‘The Commitments’, ‘The Tudors’) will be a participant. Colin O’Donoghue (‘The Rite’), who originates from Co. Louth, will be involved with a TV Guide Magazine – TV Fan Favourites panel for his role in ‘Once Upon a Time’.

Last but not least, Cartoon Saloon, the Irish animation studio based in Kilkenny whose film ‘The Secret of Kells’ garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature in 2010, will launch its much anticipated art book’ Designing The Secret of Kells’, with the filmmakers on hand. They will also offer a sneak peek at their upcoming 2014 animated release ‘Song of the Sea’ by providing exclusive footage along with a behind-the-scenes presentation by the film's director, Tomm Moore. Panelists include Tomm Moore (director) and Paul Young (producer), emcee Jamie Kezlarian Bolio (Cartoon Saloon-US; business development, PR & marketing), and moderator Don Hahn (producer ‘Maleficent’, ‘Beauty & the Beast’).
