Presented by Norah Casey, whose husband Richard died in 2011, the frank and revealing film ‘Way to Go? Death & the Irish’ features first hand experiences of a broad range of people including healthcare professionals and people who are dying speaking openly and honestly about going through what will be the last months of their own lives.
The viewer will also hear the thoughts of and amusing anecdotes from well-known figures such as actor Gabriel Byrne, broadcasters Marian Finucane and George Hook, and comments from members of the general Irish public.
Blending even tones of light and dark material the programme prompts the question, given its 100% certain to happen to every single one of us, why don’t we want to talk about it? It also examines whether or not it possible for all of us to plan ahead for a more dignified death.
The series was produced and directed by Nuala Cunningham. Camera was by Ciaran O’Connor and Philip Graham, while editing was by Cara Holmes and Breege Rowley. Post house was by EMC with audio post by Killian Fitzgerald. The project was funded by the Irish Hospice Foundation.
The documentary airs tonight at 9.35pm on RTÉ One tonight. See the trailer below:
