RTÉ Global - the newly rebranded sales and distribution division of RTÉ - has sold 55 hours of documentary, factual entertainment and lifestyle programming to broadcasters in Australia & New Zealand, in a series of major deals just announced today.

Ms Edel Edwards, RTÉ Global’s head of programme sales, highlighted the strong demand for Irish content Down Under with acquisitions made by ABC Australia, SBS Australia, Foxtel Australia’s The History Channel and New Zealand’s Choice TV - in what amounts to a significant victory for RTÉ Global.

‘Australia and New Zealand are shaping up to be one of our most vibrant markets. There has always been an appetite Down Under for all things Irish, from our saints to our sinners, from our landscape to our literature, from our cuisine to our culture. These sales confirm that, as a brand, Ireland continues to punch above its weight,’ she said.

ABC Australia has acquired five religious and factual programmes, including four instalments of RTÉ’s long-running ‘Would You Believe?’ series - ‘Patrick: The Renegade Saint’; ‘A Farewell to Benedict’; ‘White Smoke’; and ‘Ifrah’, the story of an asylum seeker from Somalia who came to Dublin.

Also purchased by the network was ‘Lifers’, filmmaker Ruan Magan’s documentary about Irish missionaries in Papua New Guinea, Sudan and Brazil.

SBS Australia has acquired two-part series ‘Hostile Environment’, presented by Liam Cunningham, which examines the world of international private-security, and ‘Secrets of the Irish Landscape’, a three-part series following Irish naturalist Robert Lloyd Praeger on his 1895 scientific pilgrimage across Ireland.

Foxtel Australia’s The History Channel also purchased a 10-hour package, including ‘Secrets of the Irish Landscape’, ‘JFK: A Homecoming’, ‘WB Yeats: No Country For Old Men’, and ‘The Trail of Tom Crean’, Charlie Bird’s two-part series.

New Zealand’s Choice TV has acquired ‘Trish’s Paris Kitchen’, ‘Trish’s French Country Kitchen’ and ‘Trish’s Mediterranean Kitchen’ - along with three series from food writer & broadcaster Clodagh McKenna, ‘Irish Food Trails’ and the first two seasons of ‘Fresh from the Sea’.
