‘The Price of Desire’, an Irish-Belgian co-production about the life of Irish designer and architecture pioneer Eileen Gray, has commenced principal photography in France and Belgium with Dublin actress Orla Brady cast in the lead role.
Ms Brady is known for her work on such TV productions as Sky One’s ‘Sinbad’, JJ Abrams’ ‘Fringe’, and BBC’s ‘Mistresses’.
Northern Irish director Mary McGuckian had previously cast US actress Shannyn Sossamon in the role of Gray - with Brady now taking over alongside singer Alanis Morissette and Italian actor Francesco Scianna as Gray’s lovers Marisa Damia and Jean Badovici.
The plot follows Gray’s rivalry with her nemesis Le Corbusier (Swiss actor Vincent Perez) who defaced her moral right to be recognised as the author of her own work in design and architecture.
Filming is taking place at Eileen Gray's actual French villa, the e1027 Villa in Roquebrune Cap Martin, which was restored for the film - with other locations including Vezelay in France and Monev Studios in Brussels, where many of the Parisian interiors were re-created.
‘The Price of Desire’ is produced by Mary McGuckian's EG Film Productions Limited, a Lightstream Pictures co-venture, and Belgium-based Saga Films.
Other crew members include Oscar-nominated production designer Anne Seibel; art director Emmanuelle Pucci; director of photography Stefan Von Bjorn; costume designer Peter O'Brien; and unit photographer Julian Lennon.
Dublin’s Windmill Lane Pictures is providing post-production services in Ireland and the film is supported by the Irish Film Board; s.481 tax incentives; US based Liberty Liquid Films and Rush River Entertainment; Film Fortis Fund BNP and Audiovisual SGR, the EC Media Program.
Mary McGuckian is best known for directing ‘Man on the Train’, featuring U2’s Larry Mullen Jr, and ‘The Bridge Of San Luis Rey’ starring Gabriel Byrne and Robert De Niro.
Eileen Gray’s restored villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin will remain open for public viewing once filming is complete.
