‘Killing Bono’ & ‘Behold the Lamb’ Bookend Belfast FF

The programme of events for the 11th Belfast Film Festival has been announced and incudes events such as the Northern Irish premiere screening of Nick Hamm’s ‘Killing Bono’, a Northern Exposure panel event examining film deal closures and a Masterclass with ‘Neds’ filmmaker Peter Mullan.

’Killing Bono’ looks at the plight of young Bono’s classmates Neil and Ivan McCormick whose rival band is constantly overshadowed by U2. The film’s cast includes Belfast-born IFTA winning actor, Martin McCann as Bono. The Nick Hamm directed film will be the curtain raiser for the 2011 festival at 7pm on Thursday, March 31st.

The BFF will close on April 31st with a premiere screening of John McIlduff’s unconventional road movie, ‘Behold the Lamb’ which will be attended by cast and crew including actors Nigel O’Neill (Chimera) and Aoife Duffin.

Between the two films, April 1st will see a gala screening of Irish filmmaker Terry George’s ‘The Shore’ starring Ciarán Hinds (The Eclipse). The film sees Ciarán Hinds’ Jim Mahon return to Belfast from the U.S. with his daughter. Here he has to reconcile with his best friend Paddy and former fiancée, Mary, both of whom he left when he fled from the troubles to go to San Francisco. The Oscar nominated writer/director Terry George will attend this special event.

‘Matching Jack’ starring Northern Irish actor, James Nesbitt (Five Minutes of Heaven) will screen on Thursday, April 7th. James plays Connor, a man whose terminally ill son comes in to contact with another terminally ill child, Jack and his family. Other Irish films screening throughout the festival include John Friel’s ‘The Quiet Man’; Jamie Thraves’ ‘Treacle Jr’ starring Aidan Gillen (The Wire); Still Films’ ‘Build Something Modern’; Colm McCarthy’s ‘Outcast’ , starring James Nesbitt; Phillip Donnellan’s ‘The Irishmen’; Sé Merry Doyle’s feature doc, ‘Dreaming the Quiet Man’; Alexander Mackendrick’s ‘Whisky Galore on the Belfast Barge’ and Roland Joffe’s ‘The Legion Hall Bombing’.

As part of the Belfast Film Festival both the Directors Guild of Great Britain and the Ulster History Circle will be honouring Belfast director, Brian Desmond Hurst with a blue plaque which will be unveiled at the Queens Film Theatre. The plaque will be erected to honour Desmond Hurst who directed celebrated features such as ‘Scrooge’, ‘Theirs is the Glory’ along with the first British film noir, ‘On the Night of the Fire’ and one of Ireland’s first feature length talkies, ‘Irish Hearts’.

Other events taking place include a public talk with Belfast actress Patricia Quinn (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), a Desert Island Flicks discussion with BBC Northern Ireland broadcaster Gerry Anderson; the annual Belfast film festival quiz and the 15 second film festival where 48 micro-media short films will screen. A free public event, the TV Eye Debate entitled ‘Box Set or Multiplex . . . Mad Men or Mad Max’ will take place on Thursday, April 7th. Sunday, April 10th will play host to a special event entitled ‘Men in Masks’ which will look at the films that have been made about the Northern Ireland troubles.

Where talks and workshops are concerned this year’s Northern Exposure panel will explore the area of deal closures. The confirmed panellists include Optimum Releasing’s Stephen Murray; Bankside Film’s Hilary Davis and Verve Pictures’ Julia Short with Screen International editor, Mike Goodridge on board as moderator for the discussion. Actor, director, writer and producer Peter Mullan (Neds, Boy A, Trainspotting) will give a masterclass in filmmaking on Wednesday, April 6th.
