Domhnall Gleeson Receives Shooting Star Award

Fresh from his clinching of both a rising star award and acting award from IFTA this weekend, Domhnall Gleeson has been awarded the Shooting Star Award at the Berlinale International Film Festiva. The writer, actor and director received the plaudit along with the nine other shortlisted actors at a gala awards ceremony last night in Berlin.

Domhnall’s mantelpiece will have no lack of decoration following a multi-award winning few days recently; he picked up IFTA’s Best Actor in a Lead Role - Television Award for ‘When Harvey Met Bob’ for his role as Bob Geldof along with the coveted Irish Film Board/ IFTA Rising Star Award. Furthermore, last night, Monday, February 14th he was presented with the Berlinale Shooting Star Award along with nine other European actors including F. Y. Rep. of Macedonia actress Natasha Petrovic who stars in Juanita Wilson's IFTA-winning ‘As If I Am Not There’.

Chosen from a competitive list of actors from over 25 different European countries, Domhnall will be in good company with previous stars who have received a Shooting Star award early in their career, including actors Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go), Daniel Bruel (Goodbye Lenin), Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener) and Irish actress Sarah Bolger (The Tudors).

Berlinale’s Shooting Stars is a unique European programme which seeks to select the best in young European actors on the rise and has been annually presenting these awards at the Berlinale for the past 14 years. Selected from a longlist of 25 candidates proposed by member organisations of the European Film Promotion (EFP), the final ten actors were chosen by a jury of established film industry professionals for their outstanding work in feature films.

2010 has seen a busy and exciting year for Domhnall having appeared in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, alongside Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1 with veteran actors Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, Ralph Fiennes and Daniel Radcliffe, as well as playing the lead role in Tom Hall's darkly comedic Sensation. Domhnall also plays the part of Moon The Kid in Ethan and Joel Coen's True Grit, which stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.

A native of Dublin, 27-year-old Domhnall Gleeson studied Media Arts at the Dublin Institute of Technology and made his film acting debut in Martin McDonagh's short Six Shooter’ in 2004. In 2006, he earned a Tony Award nomination for his part in the Broadway production ‘The Lieutenant of Inishmore’. His work on-screen has included the TV series ‘The Last Furlong’ and the comedy show ‘Your Bad Self’ which he wrote and starred in. His recent film roles include Mark Romanek’s ‘Never Let Me Go’ in 2009 and the 2011 Berlinale opening film ‘True Grit’ from Ethan and Joel Coen.As mentioned above, he recently portrayed a young Bob Geldof in the TV Drama ‘When Harvey Met Bob’ and his other film roles have included Paul Mercier's 2005 feature, ‘Studs’, Tom Hall’s ‘Sensation’ and the final two parts of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’. Domhnall is further lined up to star in his father, Brendan Gleeson’s upcoming feature, ‘At Swim-Two-Birds’.
