Ominplex Cinemas Roll Out Digital 3D
12 Jun 2009 :
Omniplex Cinemas have announced €1m rollout plans to install Digital 3D systems in their cinemas in Galway, Santry, Limerick and Newry.

The new 3D systems will add to the company’s existing 3D installations in Omniplex cinemas in Armagh, Cork, Dundonald, Lisburn and Waterford.

Omniplex cinemas have put together a schedule of films that will be available in 3D format for the remainder of the year including:

03-Jul ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS (3-D)
31-Jul G-FORCE (3D)
28-Aug FINAL DESTINATION (3-D)
18-Sep CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS (3-D)
02-Oct TOY STORY (3-D)
16-Oct UP (3-D)
06-Nov A CHRISTMAS CAROL (3-D)
18-Dec AVATAR (3-D)

Through Omniplex’s providers Digital Cinema Limited, the cinema chain will be using the latest BARCO digital projection equipment with MASTERIMAGE 3D technology to enable the screening of these films. Audience members will be given a pair of 3D glasses to view each film.

3D films are ever increasing in popularity and with the success of ‘Monsters-v-Aliens’, ‘Coraline’ and Disney’s ‘Bolt’ this trend is set to continue. This year has seen the release of 13 digital films and the prediction is that this number will double by 2010.

3D is the technology everyone is talking about. Ridley Scott recently said, “I’ve seen some of James Cameron’s work [on Avatar], and I’ve got to go 3D. It’s going to be phenomenal.” Cameron, alongside a raft of industry leaders, is a long time advocate for 3D, as a more involving experience and an unpiratable one.

In the past few years, there have been growing indicators of the worldwide audience appeal of 3D cinema. The huge success of the ‘Monsters vs Aliens’ got everyone’s attention as did other recent titles including ‘My bloody Valentine’, ‘Coraline’, and Disney’s ‘Bolt’.

Commenting on the €1,000,000 investment, Paul Anderson (Omniplex Cinemas, Managing Director) said, “Digital 3D is the cutting edge cinema technology of today. Digital imagery presented in 3D allows for the most immersive cinema experience to date. We are delighted to be able to present Digital 3D in nine Omniplex Cinemas around Ireland, allowing more patrons than ever before to avail of the Digital 3D experience.”

“We are delighted, to be able to work with Omniplex Cinemas, to roll out their 3D presentations” said Kevin Cummins, CEO at DCL. "It has been a pleasure to continue our partnership and we wish them much success in the future."
