Studiocanal and New Line Cinema has released a first look at Evil Dead Rise, the new installment in the iconic Evil Dead horror franchise, from Irish writer/director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground).

The latest installment in the iconic horror franchise releases in UK and Irish cinemas on April 21st.

The film looked originally destined for an HBO Max exclusive launch, but news broke in August that the fifth instalment of the cult horror franchise will now premiere exclusively in cinemas. According to Collider, the decision to move it to theatres was made in part because of the trailer's performance during CineEurope. Reports after said that audiences were thrilled with the direction Cronin was taking the franchise.

Written and directed by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise stars Lily Sullivan (I Met a Girl, Barkskins), Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist, Vikings), Morgan Davies (Strom BoyThe End), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence), and introduces Nell Fisher (Northspur).

Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, Evil Dead Rise tells the twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Evil Dead Rise is produced by Rob Tapert (Ash vs Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) and executive produced by series creator and horror icon Sam Raimi (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and cult legend and “Ash” himself, Bruce Campbell, along with John Keville, Macdara Kelleher, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Romel Adam, and Victoria Palmieri.

Cronin is joined behind the camera by director of photography Dave Garbett (Z for Zachariah, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), production designer Nick Bassett (Guns Akimbo, Sweet Tooth), editor Bryan Shaw (Ash vs Evil Dead, Spartacus), and costume designer Sarah Voon (Chasing Great, Inside), with a score by Stephen McKeon (The Hole in the Ground, Primeval).

IFTN previously reported back in July 2020 that Cronin had been tapped by Raimi, Campbell and Tapert following the success of his debut feature, The Hole in The Ground, which made a number of headlines following its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in 2019. The film’s North American distribution rights were then acquired by A24 and DirecTV, as well as securing a host of other international territory sales.

“I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film,” creator Sam Raimi (Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness), previously said. “I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.”

A New Line Cinema/Renaissance Pictures presentation of a Pacific Renaissance and Wild Atlantic Pictures production, Evil Dead Rise is set to be released in UK and Irish cinemas on April 21st 2023.
