Deadly Cuts targets top grossing Irish film of 2021 following strong opening weekend

Deadly Cuts
Following its national release on October 8th, Dublin-set hairdressing comedy Deadly Cuts has ranked in third place at the Irish Box Office chart on its opening weekend - behind international productions No Time To Die and The Addams Family 2.

In a significantly difficult year for the cinema industry, Deadly Cuts achievement makes it the highest opening for an Irish film in Ireland this year.

Written and directed by Rachel Carey, Deadly Cuts received a cinema-only release in Ireland and the UK on Friday, and registered a number of sold-out screenings nationwide. Ireland delivered €59k, making it the biggest opening weekend of an Irish film since The Hole In The Ground in 2019, and the biggest opening from an Irish female director in nearly 20 years since Aisling Walsh’s Song For A Raggy Boy in 2003.

“It’s a great result, and all the Wildcard team are thrilled that Irish audiences love the film as much as we do,”said Wildcard MD, Patrick O’Neill when speaking about the opening weekend. “After such a tough 18 months, it has been rewarding to see so many sell out shows across several cinemas this weekend, and we are hopeful of the film growing in the coming weeks as word of mouth is excellent.”

Starring a strong Irish female cast including Angeline Ball (The Commitments, Shameless), Ericka Roe (Herself, Dublin Murders), Lauren Larkin (Love/Hate), Shauna Higgins (Dating Amber, Red Rock), Victoria Smurfit (Once Upon A Time, Marcella) and Pauline McLynn (Father Ted), along with Aidan McArdle (Black 47, The Fall), Deadly Cuts follows the stylists of a Dublin hair salon who become accidental vigilantes as they take on a local gang threatening their community.

The feature debut from writer/director Rachel Carey had its premiere screening in the Odeon Cinema Point Village in Dublin on Wednesday evening where it received a standing ovation.

Deadly Cuts was produced by Auveen Lush, Ciara Appelbe and Liz Gill for O’Sullivan Productions with funding from Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) and Virgin Media.
