29 Jul 2021 : News Desk
'The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell' which recently premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh, starts a busy festival run, with upcoming selections at Rhode Island International Film Festival, Vancouver Independent Film Festival, and DOCUTAH.

The film is adapted from the recently published book The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell written by Seán Ó Cuirreáin about the fate of the quiet-spoken Donegal man who killed the infamous informer James Carey on board a ship off the coast of South Africa in 1883.

Producer Ciarán Ó Cofaigh, said:

“We are delighted with the interest shown in The Queen v Patrick O’Donnell by international film festivals.  We only began to apply to film festivals a few months ago but already we’ve had a very positive reception.  The Rhode Island International Film Festival informed us that we were chosen from over 6,700 submissions from more than 98 countries!”

The film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 22ndand so far, has been short-listed for an award or selected for the following international film festivals:

  • Rhode Island International Film Festival (Aug 9-15th)
  • Vancouver Independent Film Festival (Sep 30th)
  • DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival, Utah(Nov 1st)
  • Madrid ARThouse Film Festival(Nov 20th)

Although the story is that of a simple labourer from Gaoth Dobhair, Co. Donegal, it also has strong national and international dimensions as the story unfolds in the United States, South Africa and Britain. It tells tells the fascinatingly complex story of how Pádraig Ó Dónaill/Patrick O’Donnell, a man from the Donegal Gaeltacht with no overt political affiliations, came to shoot and kill one of the leading figures of the assassination squad The Invincibles - and Ireland’s most notorious informer - James Carey on a ship off the coast of South Africa in 1883. The film constructs a dramatic canvas upon which a most unlikely character becomes a nation’s avenging angel.

The cast is led by Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde (Silence), Stephen Jones (Into the Badlands, Brídín Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh (Ros na Rún) and Sophie Campbell.

‘The Queen v Patick O’Donnell’ was directed by Tomás Seoighe, and produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh, Eilís Ní Cheallaigh and Seán Ó Cuirreáin for ROSG.Core crew includes Mary Crumlish as editor, Burschi Wojnar as DoP, Margot Cullen as designer, Kate Howard as costume designer and Jim Corr as first assistant director.

The film is funded by TG4, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann and Section 481 through the Department of Revenue.
