Vertigo Releasing acquires UK & Ireland right for Parallel Films' My New York Year

My New York Year, the Irish-Canadian co-production from Parallel Films and Memento Films, has become the first title confirmed for release when cinemas reopen in the UK post-lockdown with Vertigo Releasing acquiring UK and Ireland rights for the film.

The news comes after the UK government announced yesterday that cinemas could provisionally reopen as of May 17th as part of a phased easing of lockdown measures.

Formerly My Salinger Year, the co-production opened the Berlinale last year and can be seen by Irish audiences next month when it makes its Irish premiere at the virtual Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival, which runs from March 3rd to March 14th.

The film is led by Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver with Irish actors Brian F. O’Byrne and Seána Kerslake, as well as British actor Douglas Booth rounding out the cast.

Set in New York during the 1990s, the film follows an aspiring writer Joanna (Qualley), who after leaving graduate school to pursue her dream of becoming a writer, gets hired as an assistant to Margaret (Weaver), the stoic and old-fashioned literary agent of J. D. Salinger.

Fluctuating between poverty and glamour, she spends her days in a plush, wood-panelled office where Dictaphones and typewriters still reign and agents doze off after three-martini lunches, while she spends her nights in a sink-less Brooklyn apartment with her socialist boyfriend.

Joanna’s main task is processing Salinger’s voluminous fan mail, but as she reads the heart-wrenching letters from around the world, she becomes reluctant to send the agency’s impersonal standard letter and impulsively begins personalizing the responses. The result is both humorous and moving, as Joanna while using the great writer’s voice, begins to discover her own.

My New York Year is based on US author Joanna Rakoff’s international bestseller My Salinger Year, which was adapted by writer/director Philippe Falardeau. Cinematographer; Sara Mishara, Editor; Mary Finlay, Production Design; Elise de Blois, and Music; Martin Leon.

The film is produced by Luc Déry and Kim McCraw of Microscope and co-produced by Susan Mullen and Ruth Coady of Parallel Films. The film is supported by Screen Ireland, Telefilm Canada, Sodec, and Memento Films.

No Irish release date has been announced as the country awaits new Covid Guidelines from Government.
