William Nicholson, screenwriter of Gladiator & Les Misérables, to open this year‘s Foyle Film Festival
15 Nov 2019 : News Desk
Screenwriter William Nicholson
One of Hollywood’s top writers, William Nicholson, will appear at the Foyle Film Festival opening night to discuss his latest movie, Hope Gap.

Through his very prestigious career William Nicholson has worked with some of the biggest names in the business; including the likes of Sean Connery, Jodie Foster, Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Jackman, Andrew Garfield and Angelina Jolie.

Nicholson began his distinguished career at the BBC Television as a documentary filmmaker before moving into drama. His plays for television include Shadowlands and Life Story, both of which won the BAFTA Best Television Drama award.

His first play, an adaptation of Shadowlands, was Evening Standard Best Play of 1990 and went on to a Tony Award-winning run on Broadway. He was nominated for an Oscar® for the screenplay of the film version, which was directed by Richard Attenborough and starred Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.

Since then his film credits have had many impressive highlights including: Nell with Liam Neeson, First Knight with Richard Gere, Gladiator (as co-writer, for which he received a second Oscar® nomination), Elizabeth: the Golden Age with Cate Blanchett, Les Misérables with Anne Hathaway and also Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom with Idris Elba.

He will be in attendance for the opening night of this year’s Film Festival, which is a special screening of his second film as a writer and director. Hope Gap, starring Annette Benning and Bill Nighy, is the tale of a couple's visit with their son that takes a dramatic turn when the father tells him he plans on leaving his mother.
