Screen Ireland Announces Q1 2019 Funding Decisions

Screen Ireland has announced the successful applicants for funding for the first quarter of 2019.

A diverse mix of well-established and up-and-coming talent feature among the latest crop of funding decisions across fiction, animation, and documentary. Projects are given funding at development, production and distribution stages.

 

Development Funding

Writer/Director John Butler, who prepares for the release of his third feature film ‘Papi Chulo’ on June 7th, looks set to continue his fruitful relationship with Treasure Entertainment on new project ‘Bi Bi Baby’, which receives €37,000 in funding for project development.

Also under development funding are brothers Director Darren Thornton and Colin Thornton, creators of ‘A Date for Mad Mary’, which won Best Film at the 2017 IFTA Film and Drama Awards. The pair have received funding of €35,950 for ‘Four Mothers’ with Martina Niland’s Port Pictures.

Gerard Barrett’s new project ‘Famine’ has been awarded €24,670 with Blank Page Productions producing.€27,800 went to ‘Young Skins’ for Blinder Films, with Eugene O’Brien directing. Laura McGann’s ‘The Blue Hole’ receives the only offer for documentary development funding for ‘€15,000 with Motive Films producing.

Six screenplays are also included in the development line-up with offers ranging from €12,000-25,000 for the respective projects. These include ‘Ghost Town’ (€20,000) and ‘Piece’ (€25,000) from writer/director partnership Alan Foley and Alan Holly, which are produced by Dear Will and And Maps and Plans, respecitively. Rebecca Daly and Glenn Montgomery follow up their 2018 title ‘Good Favour’ with ‘A High Place’, which receives €16,000, while Mike Cockanyne and Vince Cleghorne also receive €16,000 for ‘Lambs’ with Hardy Films producing

Other significant development awards go to International Television Development where five projects have received development funding. Gary Duggan’s ‘Caherduin’, produced by 925 Productions, receives €27,400; Matt Charman’s ‘The Year of the Beast’, produced by Parallel Films, receives €50,000; Mary Kate O’Flanagan and Gavin Ryan’s ‘Spartacus Rising’ receives €38,000 with Treasure Entertainment producing; Maeve McQuillan and Tamara Maloney receive €27,900 for ‘Darkened Room’ with Blinder Films producing; and Robin Hill’s ZOM-B’ receives €23,652 with Fantastic Films producing.

Production Funding 

For projects under the production category, the most significant award has been given to Element Pictures for ‘’Herself’, an Irish fiction production directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Claire Dunne and Malcolm Campbell, totalling €750,000.

Following this is Blinder Films ‘Boys from County Hell’, which received €550,000 and is helmed by writer/director Chris Baugh (‘Bad Day for the Cut’). Ink and Light’s animated television programme ‘Ollie’ receives €175,000 with Anton Setola attached to direct.

Two Fiction Creative Co-Productions receive offers of commitment with Julie Ryan of MK1 Productions new Irish-Polish drama ‘I Never Cry’ receiving €125,000, while Brennus Film Productions ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ awarded €250,000.

7 provisional offers of commitment in production funding for this year also signals the volume and quality of work being produced in Ireland at present. These offers have been made to the following:

  • ‘L.O.L.A’, Cowtown Pictures, Andrew Legge (Writer/Directors)
  • ‘The Restoration of Grayson Manor’, Fantastic Films, Glenn McQuaid (Writer/Director)
  • ‘The Night I Got Shot By Santa’, Calico Pictures, Michael Lennox (Writer/Director)
  • ‘TWIG’, Metropolitan Films International Ltd., Marian Quinn (Writer/Director)
  • Animation: ‘Freddy Buttons’, Treehouse Republic, Graham Holbrook (Director), Shane Perez, Fiona Dillon, Alan Keane (Writers)
  • Documentary: ‘Stokely’, Underground Films Limited, Kim Bartley (Writer/Directors)
  • Documentary: ‘Screamers’, Cowtown Pictures, Ciaran Cassidy (Writer/Directors)

Distribution Support

Lee Cronin’s hit horror ‘The Hole In The Ground’ received €75,000 in distribution support, which was handled by Wildcard Distribution.

Four projects received direct distribution funding from Screen Ireland. These included Viko Nikci’s Magdalen Laundry psychological-drama ‘Cellar Door’, which received €12,500 and was distributed by Samson Films.

‘An Engineer Imagines’ (Marcus Robinson) received €12,500 with Igloo Productions handling the distribution, while Frank Shouldice’s debut feature film ‘The Man Who Wanted To Fly’, received €12,500 and was distributed by Loosehorse Ltd. David Gleeson’s psychological-drama ‘Don’t Go’ also received €12,500 and was distributed by Wide Eye Films Ltd.
