Foyle Film Festival announce Oscar Nominated Irish Director will Lead Filmmaking Event
15 Nov 2017 :
One of Ireland’s most renowned directors, Jim Sheridan, will join a host of leading film industry luminaries at the Foyle Film Festival’s ‘From Shorts to Features’ conference in the Nerve Centre - Friday 24 November.

Sheridan is best known for The Field’, ‘In the Name of the Father’ and ‘My Left Foot’ that between them received 13 Academy Award® nominations. The latter will screen in Brunswick Moviebowl on Friday 24 November, introduced by Jim Sheridan himself.

As part of an ‘In Conversation’ with BBC Radio Ulster’s Marie-Louise Muir, Sheridan will chart his long distinguished career which has personally earned him six Oscar® nominations, to date. He will give participants an insight into working with the likes of Terry George, on ‘Some Mother's Son’, Daniel Day–Lewis on The Boxer’ and the rapper 50 Cent on the 2015 film Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

Most recently he directed the short film, The Eleventh Hour’ with Salma Hayek, which screens as part of this year’s Light in Motion Competition.

Merlin Crossingham, award-winning Creative Director at Aardman Animation Studio, known for his work on ‘Chicken Run’ and ‘Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbitt’ has also joined the line-up. Aardman’s most recent productions include Shaun The Sheep 2’ due for release in 2019 and Early Man’, starring Eddie Redmayne, Maisie Williams, and Tom Hiddleston, released in January 2018.

Completing the programme is James Flynn, producer of the Oscar® nominated short film The Door’, established writer/director Aislinn Clarke and Chris Baugh and Brendan Mullin from ‘Bad Day For The Cut’ which recently impressed audiences at the Sundance Film Festival. Together they will share their industry experience to help filmmakers bridge the gap between shorts and features.

Since 1997 Flynn has worked on a number of acclaimed feature films such as Angela's Ashes’, ‘P.S. I Love You’, ‘Calvary’, and ‘Tomato Red’. He has also worked extensively in television, as producer on The Tudors’ and the gritty crime drama Love/Hate’.

Clarke’s debut feature film The Devil's Doorway’ was snapped up as a work in progress by the prestigious sales agency Mr Smith (The BFGGirl on a Train) and screened at the Cannes Film Festival Marché. It has secured international distribution and will be released in 2018. She is currently working on a BBC pilot, due to be shot in summer 2018, and has a second feature film in development.

‘Bad Day For The Cut’, is part of a regional tour supported by Film Hub NI, in partnership with Belfast Film Festival, and stars Nigel O'Neill and Susan Lynch. The film, which received investment from Northern Ireland Screen, was shot in locations across Belfast and Templepatrick.

Foyle Film Festival is funded by Department for Communities through Northern Ireland Screen and by Derry City and Strabane District Council. Venue partner is Brunswick Moviebowl.
