The UK and Ireland rights to the feature examining the Northern Irish Soccer player from Daniel Gordon (Match 64) have been acquired, with a 2017 release scheduled.
The project is produced by Trevor Birney and Brendan J. Byrne (Bobby Sands: 66 Days) of Belfast-based Fine Point Films, and also by John Battsek (Searching for Sugarman) of Passion Pictures.
‘George Best: All By Himself’ engages in particular with Best’s struggles with alcoholism and eventually with his career. It premiered last month at the BFI London Film Festival, as part of the Journey stream.
Trevor Birney, MD Fine Point Films:
"Our objective was to bring the story to another level through extended interviews with a number of high profile people, delving deeper into their relationship with Best through his periods of significant success - and also when suffering from his darkest moments from his alcoholism which defined most of his later life."
Oli Harbottle, Head of Distribution at Dogwoof:
“We were immediately excited when we first heard that the story of George Best was being made into a feature documentary a few years ago. With the hugely talented Dan Gordon as director and the combined heavyweight experience of both Fine Point Films and Passion Pictures as producers, the end result doesn’t fail to deliver. We’re looking forward to sharing the film with audiences in the first quarter of 2017.”
