The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has welcomed Irish cinematographer PJ Dillon ISC as its latest member.

The Kerryman becomes only the third Irish representative to earn the honour following previous ASC members Seamus McGarvey (Atonement and Anna Karenina) and Declan Quinn (Hysterical Blindness and In America).

“To be invited to join the ASC is a very great honour,” said Dillon when speaking with IFTN.

“Through its promotion and celebration of the art of cinematography, the ASC represents the gold standard of the craft,” he continued. “It's a truly international organisation and I'm delighted to be joining Declan Quinn and Seamus McGarvey as another Irish member.”

A founding member of the Irish Society of Cinematographers, Dillon is an enormously successful and experienced cinematographer boasting major television credits such as Game of ThronesVikings, and Altered Carbon. Along with Emmy, ASC and BSC nominations, he has won three IFTA Awards for cinematography for his work on BBC series Ripper Street, Ian Power’s Runaway (2010) starring Oscar Nominee Demián Bichir, and Irish coming-of-age drama, 32A (2009).

Dillon’s most recent projects include AMC’s Into the Badlands and The Alienist, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Cinematography for a Limited Series/Movie in 2018. PJ was also nominated for an American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award earlier this year for his work on The Rook.

This year's ASC Awards saw three Irish cinematographers nominated across two categories with Peter Robertson receiving his first nomination and John Conroy’s second for an award that he ultimately won in the ‘Motion Picture, Miniseries, or Pilot Made for Television’ category. Three Irish cinematographers being nominated in the same year, following the nominations for Robbie Ryan and Cathal Watters last year, is a unique achievement and is a testament to the standard of cinematography in our industry,” said Dillon.

“Cinematography in Ireland is in a golden age right now and I consider myself very lucky to be a part of that,” continued Dillon. “Irish cinematographers are producing incredible work both at home and internationally. Long may it continue!”

Dillon’s work can next be seen in the highly anticipated Disney Plus miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
