16th Century Waterford Castle is uniquely situated on a private 310-acre picturesque enchanting, sheltered and secure island on the River Suir just minutes from Waterford City.

Experience a wonderful sense of anticipation as you make the short crossing by ferry to the island and travel the beech-lined drive to the Castle as you enter the massive studded oak doors you are surrounded by the Castle’s 500-year history.

A carved granite archway next leads them into the grand entrance hall and drawing room, dominated by a huge, open log fireplace, and furnished with fine Irish antiquities, 17th century tapestries and oil paintings in keeping with the charm and character of the Castle.

The original Norman keep on this site was replaced by a tower during the 15th century, which survives to this day as the centre of the present Castle. Over the centuries the tower was added to and in 1875 and 1895 the East and West wings were added, creating what is now known as Waterford Castle, which houses the grand entrance hall, the Munster Room, Leinster Room, Fitzgerald Room and 19 spacious guest rooms.

All 5 suites and 14 deluxe guest rooms have been refurbished recently and, although they inevitably vary in size and outlook (and many have some of those characterful quirks typical of old buildings), all are very comfortably furnished in a luxurious country house style, with an elegant décor full of authentic period detail and antiques as well as all the modern comforts of a world class hotel. Each of the 5 suites has a private sitting room and the 14 deluxe bedrooms are en-suite twins and double/kings.

As an alternative to staying in Waterford Castle Hotel, there is also the option of the privacy and freedom of staying in an island holiday home. Contemporary and stylish, Waterford Castle Lodges are superbly designed to optimize space and light, located on the original site of the old island glasshouses. These 3 bedroom self-catering lodges sleep up to 6 people and have been fitted out to the highest standards, providing the perfect blend of country retreat with the ultimate in contemporary luxury living.

Surrounded by woodlands and adjacent to a challenging 18-hole championship golf course the Island is a natural environment for flora & fauna. There is an amazing array of wildlife on the Island offering the opportunity to spot some of Ireland’s natives such as Hares, Deer, Pheasant, Foxes, Herons and Swans.
