Large period General Post Office building with a fine curved façade and arcaded windows. This is a real GPO, in the British style, and is still a focal point for the people of the City, sitting right in the pedestrianised heart of the Centre. People gather to sit on the benches outside & arrange to meet there, while the place rings to the sound of ‘Echo, Echo’ as newspaper vendors sell the local paper, the Evening Echo. Like the GPO in Dublin, it was both an important symbol of British Administration & power that has been assimilated into modern day life in the Republic.
