There is a legend that tells of a man named Conn and he was a son of the sea. In ancient Irish this was “Mac na Mara” such was the wisdom, and fortitude of this figure that his name was adopted by the mythical region over which he held sway and so was born Connemara.

This magical part of the West endures to this day and at its heart is the Barony of the O’Flaherty’s, Ballynahinch. Today Ballynahinch Castle is still the beating heart of this spectacular landscape, central to the life of its people, culture and heritage. A superb luxury hotel set amidst 450 acres of gardens, woods, lakes and rivers it still preserves the 16th Century ruin that was the O’Flaherty dwelling on the island.

Secure and well served with modern communications the estate is a mere 3 hour drive from Dublin airport and just 2 hours from Shannon. Private aircraft may land at Galway Airport and those guests are in the Castle within the hour. Helicopters have easy landing on site.

The 40 bedroom property is conveniently broken into 3 sections which allows for greater privacy and private access. The luxury river-side wing with 9 rooms, three suites and 2 lounges is particularly suitable for discreet groups. With an award winning restaurant overlooking our own private salmon river the hotel also boasts a superb and informal Fisherman’s Pub serving more simple local produce.

The private yet welcoming nature of Ballynahinch affords the visitor the discretion they seek while allowing a relaxed and unscripted experience The hotel and it’s team of hospitality professionals are accustomed to welcoming a diverse and demanding public. Internationally renowned, we have catered for the most exacting of guests. Our experience with film production allows us an intuitive understanding of the rigors and idiosyncrasies of this industry.

Previous on site productions such as Kevin Reynolds’ Tristan and Isolde and the shooting of Marley & Me with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson were accommodated without fuss. More recent engagements included hosting Amy Adams while filming Leap Year on our estate.

With attention to detail and a relaxed informality Ballynahinch Castile is the ideal location from which to direct any production, be it on-site, or in the wider dramatic Connemara landscape.
